What is Food Satiety Index (FSI)

The FSI is a measure of how full and satisfied different foods make you feel after eating them. The index was created to help people make more informed food choices that could help them control their appetite and manage their weight. It measures the level of fullness and satisfaction a food provides by comparing it to a reference food (usually white bread or glucose). (Images courtesy: iStock)

The satiety scale

The satiety scale is a tool that measures the level of fullness and satisfaction someone feels after eating a certain food or meal. It is a subjective rating system where individuals rate their level of hunger and fullness before and after eating using a numerical scale or visual rating system. All the foods are rated between 0 and 100 on an average on the satiety scale. Foods that have a higher satiety index are those that are more filling and satisfying for longer periods of time.

Which foods have high FSI

The FSI takes into account several factors that contribute to satiety, including the type and amount of protein, fibre, and carbohydrates in the food, as well as its water and fat content. Foods that are high in protein & fibre and low in fat & refined carbohydrates tend to have higher satiety values. Some examples of foods with high satiety values include potatoes, whole grains, lean meats, fish, eggs, and legumes. Foods that are low in satiety values include sugary drinks, processed snacks, and candy.

How FSI can make you healthy?

The food satiety index (FSI) can help you maintain a healthy diet by helping you make more informed food choices that can help control your appetite and manage your weight. From helping you choose more filling foods to helping to maintain stable blood sugar levels, FSI levels can also help you to meet your nutrient needs. It also helps you to make sustainable changes to your diet. Overall, using the FSI to choose foods that are more filling and satisfying can help you maintain a healthy diet and reduce your risk of chronic diseases like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease.
