5 symptoms of blocked arteries seen in hands or arms

Blocked arteries are often associated with heart strokes or attacks, but they can manifest in different ways. When those arteries become narrowed or obstructed, the hands may even begin to show some signs, unusually so, long before things become critical. If the blood flow in the arms or hands is reduced, the tissues are not receiving enough oxygen and nutrients they need. Over time, this can worsen from mild numbness to serious health complications..
Here are five most overlooked warning signs that may indicate block or narrowed arteries.

Severe hand pain (sudden onset)

Sudden sharp pain in in one hand could be a red flag for a blood clot or a blocked artery. This type of pain may feel sharp, deep or sometimes overwhelming, it usually affects one hand, and it could be a sign of critical limb ischemia, a medical condition where the blood flow in suddenly cut off. Along with intense pain, one can experience numbness or a tingling sensation, as nerves in the hand suddenly become deprived of oxygen. Though this is less common in peripheral artery disease, it can happen when the artery disease has progressed to a critical stage.

3/9

Discolouration of fingers

Often the reduced blood flow can lead to changes in skin color, particularly fingers, one might notice that their fingers are turning blue, white or purplish depending upon how serious the restriction is. Although, these might be triggered by cold or stress. This is a type of Peripheral artery disease known as Acrocyanosis (Persistent bluish discoloration of hands and feet from poor circulation)

4/9

Forearm fatigue or arm cramps

Medically known as claudication, it can affect the forearms and arms when the arteries supplying blood to these areas are narrowed or blocked. When the arteries in our arms are partially blocked by atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque inside the artery walls, the muscles don't get enough oxygen rich blood during activities. They can feel tired, heavy or cramped up! This may indicate that the peripheral artery disease is affecting the upper limbs.

5/9

Slow growing nails

Peripheral Artery disease is caused by poor blood flow to the veins, and when that poor blood flow worsens, beyond medications it slowly tissue health, including nails and skin. This might result in slow-growing or brittle fingernails. In more advanced cases nail growth may eventually stop altogether, nails may start to appear, discoloured and unhealthy
