How to become intelligent?


For thousands of years, the wisdom of ancient India has provided an abundance of methods for developing enhanced intelligence and a sharper mind. These techniques, which have their roots in Ayurveda, Yoga, and spiritual traditions, are still useful and beneficial to improve cognitive function and mental clarity. These traditional guidance, which range from food to meditation techniques. The following are 5 effective strategies that ancient Indians employed to maintain mental acuity and concentration.

Ayurvedic herbs

Certain herbs were used by ancient Indian healers to improve memory and nourish the brain. Ashwagandha and Brahmi are two exceptional herbs that have long been linked to brain wellness. Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) is well-known for its relaxing properties, which lower stress and enhance memory and focus. Brahmi helps in boosting the synthesis of brain chemicals involved in memory and learning.

In a similar vein, ashwagandha, another Ayurvedic plant, improves stress relief and mental clarity. Long-term cognitive performance depends on the body's ability to handle stress, which it does by acting as an adaptogen.

Meditation


Meditation has been a central practice in ancient Indian spirituality, with profound effects on brain power and intelligence. Practices like “Dhyana” (meditative concentration) and “Vipassana” (insight meditation) train the brain to focus deeply, sharpen concentration, and improve memory retention. Scientific studies today confirm that meditation can enhance grey matter density, which is associated with memory, emotional regulation, and self-awareness.

Yoga

As an extensive mind-body practice, yoga provides particular poses and breathing techniques that balance energy and promote brain function. Pose types including Sarvangasana (shoulder stand), Shirshasana (headstand), and Padmasana (lotus pose) are emphasised in ancient literature,.

Another technique in the yoga tradition that increases oxygen flow to the brain, lowers stress and improves attention is pranayama, or yogic breathing.

The right diet: Sattvic foods

In Ayurveda, a “Sattvic” diet—one filled with pure, natural, and nutrient-rich foods—is believed to be essential for brain health. Ancient Indians favored foods like nuts, seeds, milk, fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and ghee for mental clarity. Ghee (clarified butter), in particular, is known in Ayurveda to nourish the brain and nervous system and is often used in cooking or taken with herbs.

Sattvic foods are meant to keep the mind calm, alert, and balanced, enhancing cognitive function over time. Today, many of these foods are recognized as “brain foods” due to their richness in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals that are crucial for brain health.

Chanting and sound therapy

Ancient Indian traditions placed a high value on the power of sound and vibrations in improving brain function. Chanting mantras, such as "Om" or other Vedic mantras, was thought to stimulate brain areas responsible for memory, focus, and mental clarity. The repetition of particular sounds is supposed to produce good vibrations that help reduce stress and anxiety, both of which have been shown to impair cognitive performance.

Sound therapy has also been used to synchronise brainwaves, promoting states of calm and focus, and helping in information absorption and retention. This type of mental activity helped ancient Indians sharpen their minds, nurture peace, and improve their memory.
