5 everyday habits that can turn fatty liver into cancer (and how to prevent it)

Fatty liver disease is a common condition where excess fat accumulates in the liver. It is broadly categorized into two main types: alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD, the more common type, occurs when fat builds up in the liver of people who drink little to no alcohol, and it can progress to more serious conditions like NASH (nonalcoholic steatohepatitis), cirrhosis and cancer development throughout the years. Here are 5 everyday habits that turn Fatty liver disease into cancer over the years, provided one is not careful, though they can lead to other conditions as well...

2/7

Consuming high amounts of sugar/ultra-processed foods

The liver becomes overloaded when you regularly drink sugary beverages and consume sweets and packaged snacks. Foods that contain excessive sugar (such as sodas and candies) and refined carbohydrates (white bread and pasta), as well as ultra-processed items (chips and fast food), cause direct liver fat accumulation. Research indicates people who frequently drink sugar-sweetened beverages face a 40% increased chance of developing fatty liver disease. Prolonged fat accumulation in the liver, leads to swelling which eventually elevates cancer probabilities. The fix? Switch to natural whole foods instead of processed items by selecting vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts and healthy proteins, to decrease liver stress while lowering cancer chances.

3/7

Being inactive or sitting too much

Sitting is the new smoking, they say. Your body requires regular physical movement because extended periods of sitting at work or on the couch slow down fat metabolism. The liver needs assistance to remove and process fats effectively, so the accumulation of fats increases when physical activity is reduced. Doctors state that weekly exercise requirements must include at least 150 minutes of moderate activities including walking, cycling or swimming. The addition of small movements like stair climbing while using your phone for talking, will help you achieve better results. The combination of increased metabolism and reduced liver fat along with decreased inflammation from physical activity, enables essential disease prevention. Everyday movement needs to be integrated into your routine, to protect against fatty liver complications and cancer.

4/7

Regularly consuming fried and fatty foods

Fried foods, together with fast food items that contain saturated or trans fats, create excessive liver stress. Unhealthy fats in the body create difficulties for liver processing, which results in abnormal cholesterol formation and swelling. The accumulation of these changes across time, creates conditions for cirrhosis to develop which strongly increases the danger of liver cancer. Incorporate olive oil together with fatty fish, seeds and avocados into your meals to receive healthy fats. The liver requires less work when you reduce your consumption of red meat. A Mediterranean-style diet serves as an ideal eating pattern for safe liver fat reduction.

5/7

Excess belly weight

Being overweight functions as a primary factor for fatty liver disease, and the risk multiplies when body fat accumulates in the abdominal area. Being overweight leads to insulin resistance, while accelerating the storage of liver fat. Excess body weight leads to enhanced liver inflammation, alongside scarring and increased cancer risk. The solution: watch your portion sizes, eat balanced meals, and exercise regularly. Reducing your weight by 5-10%, can lead to better liver enzyme test results. The key to success lies in regular healthy decisions, which include switching to water when thirsty, and adding vegetables to your meals.

6/7

Drinking alcohol and/or smoking

The liver cells experience damage from both alcohol consumption and smoking habits. The progression of fatty liver disease into cirrhosis and cancer becomes accelerated, by drinking any amount of alcohol. On the other hand, cigarettes release toxic substances that lead to both liver cell damage and inflammation in the body. The healthiest course of action involves complete abstinence from smoking, while restricting your alcohol consumption as much as feasible. Your liver health will benefit from selecting safer beverages such as water together, with black coffee and herbal tea. The elimination of these habits leads to liver protection, which extends to overall health improvements throughout your entire body.
