Exercises to avoid while on medication

While exercising is one of the easiest ways to avoid taking medications in the future, if you are currently on some, there are certain exercises that must be avoided. Due to their pose or intensity, these can interfere with your medications causing harmful damage to your health and your healing process.

2/7

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

HIIT exercises have been all the rage recently. These regimes include short sessions of intense workouts that rapidly elevate your heart rate, blood pressure and breathing. For people on medication for all these, the effects can be adverse. Thus, avoid HIIT workouts when taking medicines such as beta-blockers, opioids, and antidepressants.

3/7

High-impact activities

Activities such as football, boxing or other contact sports not only pose a risk of injury but also pose danger for people on medications. Medications such as opioids, blood thinners, certain antibiotics and more increase the risk of bleeding, bruising or breaking in the body and doing sports while taking them could ensure you a trip to the ER.

4/7

High heat or humidity exercises

Heading for a sauna or hot yoga? Well, make sure you are not on medications that could impact your health. These include diuretics, antihypertensives and anticholinergics, which imbalance heat regulation and increase the risk of dehydration and heat-related illnesses.

5/7

Heavy weightlifting

A lot of medicines are aimed at lowering blood pressure and relaxing the body. When you lift heavy weights for a long period of time, it can have the opposite effect on the body. Additionally, these medicines can obstruct your ability to lift weights by causing cramps or drowsiness and still doing so can strain the heart and body. These include statins, beta blockers, antihistamines and more.

6/7

Long-distance cycling

Certain medications like opioids and antidepressants typically affect your coordination and reaction times. These take effect much later and can lead to drowsiness, impaired judgement or dizziness.
