Diabetes drug can also protect heart and liver? Doc answers as Mounjaro slashes man’s insulin by 70%
Imagine you are juggling college or your job and somehow dessert has become dinner. You are sprinting through reels, stressing over work and treating your body like a vending machine. That constant whirl of high stress, poor sleep, junk food is not just exhausting your spirit, it might actually be nudging your blood sugar dangerously high. That is not a future scenario. It is now.
In an interview with the Times of India, Dr Manjunath Malige, Director of Endocrinology at Sakra World Hospital in Bengaluru, warned, “We are seeing more cases of Type 2 diabetes, particularly in the age group below 25 years, mainly due to stress and unhealthy lifestyles.” According to him, the culprits are familiar: “personal and professional” stress, a high-calorie diet and very little exercise. When we pile on weight and skip movement, our metabolisms unravel. Even more startling, he added, “We are also observing more cases of ‘thin diabetes’,” where people might not look overweight but still suffer the metabolic damage triggered by chronic stress.
Some early red flags, Dr Malige noted, include “feeling tired and lacking energy, unexplained weight loss, excessive thirst and frequent urination and recurrent genital infections.” These subtle signals do not always get the attention they deserve but ignoring them can be risky.
Take the case of a 50-year-old man under Dr Malige’s care. He was obese (BMI 30), battling uncontrolled type 2 diabetes and had already suffered a heart attack. Despite being on high doses of insulin and multiple oral diabetes meds, his blood sugar refused to cooperate.
Enter Mounjaro (generic: tirzepatide), a dual-action injection that not only lowers blood sugar but supports weight loss. Dr Malige revealed, “Within two months, his blood sugar levels improved significantly and he lost nearly 6 kg. As a result, we were able to reduce his insulin dosage by over 70% and also cut down the number of diabetes tablets he needed.”
However, the benefits did not stop there. According to Dr Malige, Mounjaro does not just help with glucose, it also “helps reduce the risk of heart attack, heart failure and fatty liver, while contributing to overall better health.”
Mounjaro is increasingly seen as a power-player in metabolic health. In an international trial called SUMMIT by American Heart Association, adults with heart failure, preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and obesity, took tirzepatide for over ~2 years. The participants had a 38% lower risk of worsening heart failure or cardiovascular death, compared to placebo.
That result is supported in a recent 2025 study in Cardiovascular Endocrinology & Metabolism, where researchers report that GLP-1 receptor agonists (like tirzepatide) “consistently demonstrated reductions in heart failure hospitalisations and cardiovascular mortality”.
Another preclinical 2024 study published in Cardiovascular Diabetology showed that tirzepatide protects cardiac cells under high-glucose stress by reducing cell death, fibrosis and hypertrophy, all of which contribute to heart failure in diabetes.
As for the claim on fatty liver or liver fat reduction, a 2023 systematic review and network meta-analysis in Frontiers in Endocrinology found that tirzepatide significantly reduced liver fat (measured by MRI) in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). At 52 weeks, liver-fat content dropped by 8.21% (10 mg dose) and 7.78% (15 mg dose).
The real takeaway is that diabetes is not just a disease of older people anymore. As Dr Malige highlighted, younger adults and even those who look “thin” are at a growing risk because of stress and sedentary lifestyles but with modern drugs like Mounjaro, we are not just managing glucose, we are treating the whole metabolic system.
That said, Mounjaro is not magic. It must be paired with lifestyle changes like better diet, more movement and stress management for the best, most sustainable results. Like any powerful medicine, it should be used under medical supervision.
Still, for people who have struggled on insulin or other medications, experts reveal that Mounjaro offers a genuinely hopeful path with better blood sugar control, meaningful weight loss and powerful protection for the heart and liver. For patients and doctors alike, that is the kind of next-gen medicine that the future promised and is delivering.
