Heart health panic: Why FDA recalled over 140,000 bottles of widely used cholesterol pill
Over 140,000 bottles of a cholesterol medication have been recalled for ‘failed dissolution specifications,’ according to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) enforcement report.
In September 2025, the FDA announced that Ascend Laboratories was recalling 141,984 bottles of its Atorvastatin Calcium Tablets, a medication used to lower cholesterol. As of October 10, the recall has been classified as Class II, which is “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote, ” as per the federal agency. The recalled medications were issued by prescription only, the FDA says. These cholesterol-lowering drugs that are affected comes in doses of 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg.
The recall was initiated due to ‘failed dissolution specifications.’ This means the drug does not dissolve the way it was supposed to during laboratory testing. When dissolution of a medication fails, it means the drug may not be ‘available for the body to absorb,’ as per the FDA. However, no illnesses have been reported yet.
The affected medication was distributed worldwide. The Sept. recall affects tablets packaged in 90-count, 500-count, and 1,000-count bottles with expiration dates as late as February 2027.
You can identify the recalled tablets with specific lot numbers listed here. Check your cabinets if you have bought these medications.
About 47 million Americans take cholesterol medication each day, according to Yale Medicine. The medication is usually a statin, which is a pill that has a powerful impact on keeping the heart healthy.
“When there is too much of a waxy substance (called cholesterol) in the blood, a statin can help to clear it away and reduce the amount the liver can make. This keeps the cholesterol from leaving fatty deposits (called plaque) in the arteries, greatly reducing the risk of heart attack or stroke,” the site says.
