Selenium is an essential trace element

Selenium plays a crucial role in maintaining the overall health and well-being of the human body. Though required in small amounts, selenium is indispensable for various physiological functions, and its absence can lead to significant health issues. In this article, we will explore the importance of selenium for the body, its functions, dietary sources, and potential health benefits.

2/9

Selenium has anti-cancer effect

While adequate selenium levels are associated with a lower risk of certain cancers, excessive intake can be harmful. Research suggests that selenium's anti-cancer effects may be related to its role in DNA repair, immune system support, and modulation of oxidative stress. However, the relationship is complex, and the benefits seem to be context-dependent. It's crucial to maintain an optimal selenium balance, as both deficiency and excess are associated with an increased risk of cancer, highlighting the importance of moderation in selenium intake.

3/9

Selenium has diverse roles in the body

Selenium serves as a key component of selenoproteins, a group of proteins that contain selenium in the form of the amino acid selenocysteine. These selenoproteins play diverse roles in antioxidant defense, thyroid hormone metabolism, DNA synthesis and repair, immune system function, and protection against infections. One of the well-known selenoproteins is glutathione peroxidase, an antioxidant enzyme that helps neutralize harmful free radicals in the body, thereby protecting cells from oxidative damage.

4/9

Antioxidant role

The antioxidant properties of selenium are particularly significant in the context of overall health. Free radicals, generated as byproducts of normal metabolic processes or through exposure to environmental factors such as pollution and UV radiation, can cause cellular damage and contribute to the aging process. Selenium, through its role in antioxidant defense, helps counteract the harmful effects of free radicals and supports the body's ability to maintain cellular integrity.

5/9

It is involved in thyroid hormone metabolism

Another critical function of selenium is its involvement in thyroid hormone metabolism. Selenium is essential for the conversion of thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) to its active form, triiodothyronine (T3). Proper thyroid function is crucial for the regulation of metabolism, energy production, and overall growth and development.

6/9

It has a central role in immunity

Selenium also plays a vital role in immune system function. It is involved in the activation and modulation of immune cells, helping the body respond effectively to infections and diseases. Adequate selenium levels are associated with improved immune responses and a reduced risk of certain infections.

7/9

Selenium deficiency

Selenium deficiency is rare in well-nourished populations, but it can occur in regions with low selenium content in the soil, leading to a deficiency in locally grown crops. Prolonged selenium deficiency may result in serious health issues, including muscle weakness, fatigue, and an increased risk of certain diseases.

How much selenium does one need in a day?

Since it is a trace element, our body needs a small amount of it on a daily basis, unlike other essential vitamins and minerals which our body needs in a large amount. Adults need up to 55 mcg of Selenium daily and kids can be given 20-30 mcg of this trace element.

Dietary sources of Selenium

While selenium is crucial for health, it's important to maintain a balance, as excessive intake can lead to toxicity. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for selenium varies by age, sex, and life stage, and it's essential to meet these recommendations through a balanced diet. Good dietary sources of selenium include nuts (especially Brazil nuts), seeds, fish, poultry, lean meats, and whole grains. Eating just one or two Brazil nuts can provide your daily recommended intake, so it's important not to consume them in excess. Various types of fish are good sources of selenium. Tuna, halibut, sardines, salmon, and shrimp are all examples of selenium-rich seafood. Crab, lobster, mussels, and oysters contain significant amounts of selenium. Eggs, especially the yolks, contain selenium. However, the selenium content in eggs can vary based on the diet of the hens. Broccoli, spinach, and potatoes are examples of selenium-containing vegetables. Beans, lentils, and peas contain selenium, although the levels may not be as high as in some other foods.
