THIS common toilet mistake is causing constipation, a top gastroenterologist warns
Constipation is a common digestive problem. Feeling blocked up is not normal; however, millions of people are suffering from it. Several factors, including poor diet, lack of exercise, certain medications, and diseases, contribute to constipation. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a California-based gastroenterologist trained at Harvard and Stanford, has warned that a common bathroom habit could be the culprit behind your bowel issues.
Yes, bathroom habits have a huge impact on how you empty your bowels. According to Dr. Sethi, a common toilet habit is causing constipation in most people.
The gastroenterologist with over 25 years of clinical experience recalled a patient who came to his office complaining of chronic constipation. “I had someone come to my office complaining about constant constipation and straining. She was eating fiber, drinking water, doing everything right.”
So, what’s the cause behind constipation? That’s when Dr. Sethi asked the patient about her “to describe how she sits on the toilet.” He soon found the culprit behind the constipation. It was her seating position on the toilet.
So what was wrong with the patient’s seating position? “She was sitting normally on a Western toilet,” the doctor shared in a newsletter. Wondering what’s wrong in that, because everyone does it?
Well, the ‘normal’ seating position on the Western toilet itself is the problem. “When you sit with your feet flat on the floor, your body isn't in the right position to empty your bowels easily. Your rectum has a bend that makes it harder for stool to pass through,” the gastroenterologist explains.
The fix is indeed simple. Dr. Sethi recommends to follow these steps:
If you are struggling with constipation, even after having a balanced diet rich in fiber and an active lifestyle, think about your seating position. “Try this tonight. Most people see results immediately. No more straining. No more sitting there for 20 minutes,” Dr. Sethi assures.

Seating position in the toilet matters
So what was wrong with the patient’s seating position? “She was sitting normally on a Western toilet,” the doctor shared in a newsletter. Wondering what’s wrong in that, because everyone does it?
How to fix it?
- Put a small stool under your feet while on the toilet
- Raise your knees above your hips
- This straightens out the bend and makes everything flow easier
