Top American doctor suggests 2 beverages that relieve heartburn instantly
Heartburn is a common digestive concern that affects millions of people worldwide. That uncomfortable burning sensation in the chest can really affect daily life. But there is a quick fix. In a recent newsletter, Dr Saurabh Sethi, a leading gastroenterologist from California, trained at Harvard and Stanford, suggests two simple beverages that can help relieve heartburn instantly.
How does water help relieve heartburn? “Your stomach acid is too concentrated, and you need something to dilute it fast. Water works because it dilutes the stomach acid and can give you immediate relief from that burning feeling. It's the simplest solution, but most people reach for antacids first,” the doctor explained.
A 2019 study showed that drinking alkaline electrolysed water can help with acid reflux. However, according to Dr Sethi, plain water works just fine.
“Ginger naturally soothes your digestive system and can help reduce the inflammation that causes heartburn,” he added.
Ginger is rich in chemicals and antioxidants such as phenolic compounds. These compounds are linked to numerous health benefits, including reducing inflammation associated with acid reflux, according to a 2023 study published in Nutrients.
