The cases of the mutated strain of influenza A, H3N2 subclade K, is surging worldwide. The US has witnessed 1900 flu-related deaths so far this season, as per CDC. The aggressive variant is spreading fast, added with the gatherings during the holiday season.
While the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention recommends vaccines as the foremost shield against the flu, other protective measures also hold equal importance. Experts are consistently giving advice that can be followed as safety measures. Dr Jeremy London, a US-based top cardiologist has also shared some tips to protect oneself during the cold and flu season. The tips are as follows:
1. Wash your hands often
Use soap or alcohol sanitizers, especially those who are going out in public. Dr London says respiratory infections typically enter the body through eyes, nose and mouth, and this is the reason why keeping the hands clean matters.
2. Vaccination
Dr Jeremy also recommends getting the vaccine or flu-shot. He adds that even though it’s not a silver bullet against the flu, it is effective in decreasing risk and severity of the flu.

Sleep, nutrition and exercise. Dr Jeremy calls them “major levers” and says that pulling them here matters more than ever. In simple words, the cardiologist recommends taking great care of the body with rest, diet and physical activity helps combat the flu.
4. Supplementation
Dr. Jeremy recommends a set of supplements and calls them “the big three”, these include: vitamin D, vitamin C, and zinc. These vitamins have shown to improve immunity.
Lastly he adds that while there’s no single panacea to prevent the flu or cold entirely, proactive preparations can go a long way.
