Why your breasts are not the same size

Is your one breast bigger than the other?

For all the attention that you give to your bosom, you probably still don’t know much about them. Do you know that you may have a lopsided breast? Probably not. A study done on 100 women, who wanted breast augmentation with implants, found out that approximately 88 per cent women had natural asymmetries.

We talked to Dr Jayashree Sundar, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Max Multi Speciality Centre, Panchsheel Park who explained what could be the possible reasons of these uneven breast sizes and what can be done to undo the difference.

It’s normal

"It is common for each breast to be slightly different in size from the other one," says Dr Sundar. In a few cases, it has been found that uneven breast size can be the reason of normal anatomic variation. Most of our body parts aren't symmetrical and there is nothing wrong with slight differences.

3/7

Hormonal changes

Another reason for your asymmetrical breasts could be changes during puberty. These changes can cause one breast to start growing before the other, however, they may stop growing at the same time. Sometimes, the difference is negligible and is hardly noticed by anyone. However, other times, the difference can be pronounced and can make you feel odd.

4/7

Breastfeeding mothers

According to Dr Sundar, “Breastfeeding mothers tend to develop uneven breasts because sometimes they feed their baby from just one breast. This can cause a difference in the size of their bosom. These mothers can try feeding the baby from both the breasts in order to maintain symmetry.”

5/7

Lumps in the breast

A breast lump is a growth of tissue that develops in the breast. These breast lumps are often considered as cancerous but they can also develop due to non-cancerous conditions. A traumatic injury in the breast can also be responsible for causing lumps in the breast.

Another reason of breast lumps is fibrocystic breasts, a condition that causes a woman's breasts to feel lumpy or rope-like. It is a common condition and isn't dangerous. However, if you feel constant breast pain, get it checked by your doctor.

Breast cancer

If you've always had even breasts but you suddenly notice that your breasts are growing uneven, it may be a matter of concern. Get it checked by your doctor if you feel a sudden change in the size or shape of your breasts.

7/7

Genetics

In most cases, there is no known cause of differential breast development. However, in certain cases, it can be due to genetic reasons. Your genes can also be responsible for an uneven bosom size. This is because genes play an essential role in determining the strength of your ligaments and elasticity of your skin. (Image Courtesy: Shutterstock)
