Here are the signs

Bollywood movies like "Devdas" or "Kabir Singh" paint a picture of love that has various sides. They depict intense and toxic love relationships allowing the partner to experience the destructive nature that love can have. From destructive behaviour to unhealthy obsession, the movies are exactly what we are here to discuss! Normalised toxic behaviour in relationships. Many times we browse through social media posts or videos that might showcase or discuss toxic relationships in a funny or mocking way, allowing the audience to believe that this might be what happens in a normal relationship. It's not just about the film industry or social media, in our everyday life we come across people who ooze out the energy of toxicity but are we all aware of what a toxic relationship is all about?

The basic characteristics of people gives us a vivid idea about them. The rest lies upon our shoulders to judge for ourselves what is right for us and what is not. There are numerous toxic behaviours that are considered quite normal or are eventually normalised by providing unnecessary explanations to the unwanted toxic behaviour. Lets bifurcate the toxic behaviour that are considered (but should not be) normal
2/9

Communication is at risk

Relationships are built on minor things which include basic communication. When that string of communication is at risk of breaking every time you try to communicate or it is extremely difficult to discuss any or everything with your partner, my friend you might be dealing with a human with a tint of toxicity. The issue of bad communication or miscommunication can not be ignored every time and given the name of bad mood, hectic work schedule or any other explanation. Observe and learn when to sign off from a similar situation.

3/9

Feeling lost

In a relationship it is important to simultaneously focus on yourself. When you feel like being lost, or have nothing to offer to yourself. You focus too much on your partner or better put, they always are successful in putting their needs and desires above your own, this might be a sign that they are not much interested in you and your individual success in life. You are left alone in the meadow resulting in you feeling unsupported or lost.

4/9

Judgement

The feeling of being judged by the person who you are so close with is the worst feeling one can feel. When someone is afraid of showcasing their own true self to their partner, it might be the result of the fear of being judged by them and they tend to simply avoid it rather than solving or confronting them. It is never okay to change for a person who is not appreciative of the true you.

5/9

Lack of empathy

The lack of empathy in any relationship results in disregarding someone's feelings. To fit in someone's shoes and understand the person's standpoint is difficult in itself and when someone is unwilling to understand your point of view and the reason for your sadness or excitement about a small thing there is a lack of empathy. Never hide it under the name of “They are like this”, it is never acceptable to not even try to understand what someone is going through.

6/9

Jealousy

Jealousy is a common emotion. You feel jealous when there is a threat to your relationship. The problem arises when jealousy takes the turn to result in irrational behavioural change. A certain change in behaviour that results in controlling or manipulative behaviour is not okay. Before the feeling of being trapped or suffocation kicks in, identify the signs and check out.

7/9

Limiting you

When you are put under limitations by your partner in the sense that your behaviour in the public is being controlled, your friendships with people is restricted, your are not “allowed” to do certain things by the your partner, might be the result of a person being a controlling maniac.

8/9

Conflict ridden

When you are in constant conflict with your partner, even on small pity things. When you observe that the only solution you come up with is more conflict and fights is a point where you need to realise that the phrase “with love comes fights” is not true all the way.

9/9

To conclude

There should be no space for accepting any kind of toxicity and at any level. Even when in a relationship you should never stop focusing on yourself. Try to understand the person before letting yourself go with the flow. It is not okay to be okay with toxicity.
