Balancing career and wellness: 5 strategies for couples leading busy lives

Dual-career couples can enjoy numerous benefits, such as sharing and supporting each other in their careers, achieving higher income, and experiencing personal satisfaction. However, they also face several challenges, including a lack of time, difficulty coordinating schedules, balancing multiple responsibilities while holding demanding jobs. These challenges can strain the couple's relationship unless both partners willingly invest time, effort, and space to maintain a strong and mutually rewarding connection.

Here are five essential measures to implement in order to achieve this, as shared by Dr. Gitanjali Natarajan, Chief Clinical Psychology Advisor at Niyama Digital Healthcare.
2/8

Quality time together

The absence of quality time can lead to feelings of loneliness and disconnection. Schedule regular date nights or weekends away to ensure both of you have the opportunity to connect and enjoy each other's company. During these moments, make an effort to engage in meaningful conversations about each other's interests, aspirations, and concerns, rather than focusing solely on topics like in-laws, children, or work.

3/8

Effective communication

Effective communication requires time and space to foster understanding and togetherness. Regularly communicate and openly share your work schedules, priorities, and needs so that your partner can better understand your situation. Be honest and clear about your expectations and needs, rather than assuming that your partner will intuitively know them.

4/8

Sensitivity in unequal career advancement

When one partner's career is more demanding or successful than the other's, it's crucial to be sensitive and careful in your communication to avoid feelings of inadequacy and envy.

5/8

Reduce technoference

Technology can be a double-edged sword, both connecting and interfering in your relationship. To avoid issues related to technology, agree on times and places where devices will not be used, such as during meals, in bed, or during quality time together. Make a conscious effort to put devices away when with your partner and apologize if you are interrupted by a device.

6/8

Maintain healthy boundaries

Setting boundaries is not about being selfish or controlling; it's about safeguarding your own time, well-being, and the relationship itself. Clearly and assertively communicate what is and is not acceptable for you. Don't make excuses for your partner or let them guilt-trip you into breaking your boundaries. Respect each other's work schedules and priorities and prioritize self-care.

7/8

Problem-solving together

Balancing two careers with household responsibilities and personal commitments can be challenging and lead to stress, conflict, and resentment. Effective communication, timely joint decisions, and problem-solving skills are essential. Household responsibilities, child care, and caregiving should be mutually shared rather than placing the burden solely on one partner. When faced with challenges related to children, focus on the specific issue and support each other in finding solutions.

8/8

Seek professional help if needed

If you find it difficult to manage work-life balance, experience communication issues, or notice addictive behaviors increasing, consider seeking professional help from a licensed couple therapist or psychotherapist to address the problems affecting your relationship. Investing time and effort in your couple relationship is essential for its fulfillment, even in the face of demanding careers where deadlines are not as evident as in professional life.
