Chef Kunal Kapur's divorce halted by the Supreme Court, here's why
In April this year, celebrity chef Kunal Kapur made the headlines for being granted divorce from his wife by a Delhi High Court on the grounds of cruelty by his estranged wife. But now, in a strange turn of events, the Supreme Court (SC) of India on July 29 put a stay on chef Kunal Kapur's divorce from his wife. A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti issued a notice to the celebrity chef after a petition was filed by his wife, as per reports.
The SC has now referred the case to the Supreme Court Mediation Centre for figuring out if a settlement could be possible between the estranged couple.
What went wrong between chef Kunal Kapur and his wife Ekta Kapur?
Celebrity chef Kunal Kapur and Ekta Kapur married in April 2008, and roughly four years later they were blessed with a son in 2012. However, over the years, tensions grew in their marriage and the couple filed for a divorce. Chef Kapur, who is popular for judging the TV show 'MasterChef India', accused his wife Ekta of humiliating him and disrespecting his parents too. He also alleged that she would often call the police and threaten to spread rumours about him.
Meanwhile, Ekta too accused chef Kapur of making allegations against her that were untrue. In her defense, she said that she has compromised her career for her family and has been loyal towards her husband. She also alleged that her in-laws taunted her (earlier) for having a job and not focusing on household chores.
And so, in April 2024 a Delhi High Court stated that Ekta's behaviour towards her husband, chef Kapur, was "devoid of dignity and empathy". The High Court had ruled in favour of chef Kunal Kapur and stated, "When such is the nature of one spouse towards the other, it brings disgrace to the very essence of marriage and there exists no possible reason as to why he should be compelled to live while enduring the agony of living together."
