Here's what they confessed to

Retail therapy is therapeutic! It makes us feel worth it but the truth is, too much of anything is bad. Here are some confessions of married women who were once addicted to shopping and who had their reason to shop but justified or not, read on and share your opinion with us in the comments section below.

“Well, something was happening according to me”

Being a housewife there is not just so much responsibility but also the pressure to keep things prim and proper according to the dominating personalities in the house. My husband and mother-in-law had this habit of taunting me and picking on me for little things. My husband would control even the kind of sex we should have right to the T while MIL wanted it all happening in the house as per her requirements. No one asked about mine. I had my savings account and investments before marriage when I was working. I slowly started involving myself in online shopping, grabbing the deals. I slowly realised that the message - “Your order has been placed”… “it has been shipped to you”... etc, gave me the momentary satisfaction of getting something I like. This went on for almost 6-7 months until I met a friend and told her about this. I got into therapy secretly and now I am fine and I have resumed working.

“The unboxing kept me in denial”

My marriage was falling apart ever since my kids went to college abroad. I started watching these YouTube videos of unboxing shopping hauls etc. I started keeping myself busy the whole day and eventually rubbed off on me. I began ordering something or the other every day and made unboxing videos of them. That validation, the unboxing thrill, that need to decorate a space to make those videos for social media, kept me in denial that my marriage was done with and that my husband and I were only roommates. One day, when I saw a room full of cardboard boxes and packing material, it just hit me, making me question myself. I eventually applied for divorce and opened my own brand of candle-making.

“I had spent our joint savings on useless crap!”

I am a mother of 2 working kids now and thankfully married to a man who stood with me even when I had almost emptied our joint savings for retirement! My love for shopping made me lose it. I would every time make an excuse for taking out money from the joint account. My husband has entrusted me with the debit card and given me the responsibility to take care of that savings account which was opened to have a cushioned retirement. Before I could realise, I had used more than half of the amount in lakhs on stuff I did not need. My husband realised that I had a problem and instead of fighting, he took me to therapy and made sure I didn't feel guilty. My disease could have ended my marriage, and my relationship with the kids but my husband was my partner throughout my sickness.
