How to ask your spouse for a divorce

If you are unhappy and see irreconcilable differences in your marriage, then dragging a relationship which keeps no one happy is another kind of torture. If you want a divorce and don’t know how to ask your partner for the same, then here are some ways you can approach your partner.

2/6

Ease him/her in

Sometimes even when we know it is over, we are still in denial. This could be there with your partner too. So first sit with your partner and explain that it is serious and is no longer working for you.

3/6

Place

Have this conversation in a private place where you do not have heads turning. Your own home works but in case you are elsewhere then go to a place where you won’t have to fear creating a scene.

4/6

The reaction

It is important to understand that your partner may get angry, defensive and well it will involve crying as well. So just be prepared for that heavy discussion.

5/6

What to say

You are asking for a divorce which is not a small issue. Be clear in your mind as to what you have to say. If you are determined that you want a divorce then do not give any false hope just because he/she is crying. Explain with a calm voice, list out the issues that led you to thinking about it. Let them ponder over it, digest it because you are indeed shaking their world.

6/6

No blame game please

There is no point in blaming even if you think he or she is wrong. Be clear that you do not want a counselling session because you have already thought this through. Just say it is not working out for you and end it there.
