Here's what the expert has to say

Kundli or horoscope matching is given paramount importance in our tradition since we can find out the health, family, love, relationship, children, finance, longevity, and foreign travel for the couple. You need to know the date, time, and place of birth of yourself and your partner for horoscope matching using Vedic astrology.

2/6

Nakshatra compatibility

The first step is to check the birth star (nakshatra) compatibility of the boy and girl. There are 27 nakshatras. There are many online tools available to find out the birth star matching. Please note that nakshatra compatibility only contributes to 35% for the entire matching process.

Based on the south Indian system, there are 10 compatibility types. Even if you get 6 out of 10 matches, it is appropriate. The 10 matching types are, Rasi, Rajju, Nakshatra, Gana, Yoni, Rasi Athipathi, Mahendra, Sthree Deerkka, Vasiya and Vedai.

3/6

Kundli compatibility

The other way is using the ‘kuta system’ or ‘kundli milan’ called ashtakoota. This system has a max score of 36 for 8 types. Each type and its maximum score are, Nadi (8), Rashi (7), Gana (6), Graha Mathiri (5), Yoni (4), Dina (3), Vasiya (2), Varna (1) which add up to 36. If you can get a score that is 20 or more out of 36, then it is considered good.

4/6

Lagna compatibility

The Lagna Sign Lord and Star Lord of the boy and girl’s birth chart must be compatible. If they are enemies, then there will not be any common interest between the couples. For example, ‘simha lagna’ and ‘makara lagna’ are not compatible because of their rulers, sun and saturn, which are enemies. Many people might ignore the importance of lagna compatibility.

5/6

Mahadasha compatibility

Every person will have a mahadasha and it is a cycle of 120 years to complete the mahadasha of all 9 planets. The mahadasha of the boy and girl needs to be compatible for them to live together. If the mahadasha lords are enemies to each other, then it will create a separation between the couple. Because of this, the couple will not be able to live together. One practical example would be: one spouse working in a foreign land while the other spouse will be taking care of the family in the homeland.

6/6

Strength of the horoscope

The strength of ‘lagna’, ‘poorva punya sthana’, and ‘bhagya sthana’ need to be analyzed. There should not be ‘kalathra dosha’, ‘sayana dosha’, ‘puthra dosha’, ‘rajju dosha’ and ‘maanglik dosha’. If such doshas are present, then the intensity and validity period of the dosha needs to be looked at before moving forward.

Common myths

People often believe that the girls born in Moola, Jyeshtha (Kettai) and Ashlesha (Aayilyam) nakshatras have dosha. They are also ignoring the marriage proposal with those girls completely. But there is no concept of the dosha nakshatras and no proof to justify these nakshatras have dosha.
