7 birds whose name starts with letter U

Bird names beginning with “U” are uncommon, yet they reveal a fascinating diversity of species from different parts of the world. These birds occupy rainforests, grasslands, islands, and mountains, each contributing uniquely to their ecosystems. Exploring them helps us appreciate lesser-known species and highlights the incredible variety within the avian world. Here are seven such bird species whose common names start with letter U -

2/8

Ural owl

The Ural owl is a large, pale-faced owl native to the forests of Europe and northern Asia. With its round head, piercing black eyes, and silent flight, it is an efficient nighttime hunter. Feeding mainly on small mammals, it prefers mature woods with tall trees for nesting.

3/8

Ultramarine flycatcher

The Ultramarine flycatcher is a striking bird found in the Himalayan regions. Males display vibrant deep-blue plumage with white underparts, while females show softer tones. It breeds in high-elevation forests and winters in northern India. This active insect-eater is known for its pleasant “trrr” call.

4/8

Ultramarine grosbeak

The Ultramarine grosbeak is a cobalt-blue songbird found in South America. Males are vivid blue, while females are brownish. Preferring open woodlands and thickets, it feeds on seeds, fruits, and insects. This species often stays in pairs and has a melodious, flute-like song.

5/8

Ultramarine lorikeet

The Ultramarine lorikeet is a brilliantly coloured parrot native to the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. Feeding on nectar and fruit with its specialised tongue, it plays a key role in pollination. It is endangered due to habitat loss and invasive species. Conservation efforts are ongoing.

6/8

Uniform antshrike

A fascinating bird of Central American rainforests with plain-plumaged is the Uniform Antshrike. It is known to feed on insects forced out by the ants by following the swarms of army ants due to its powerful bill. It is easily camouflaged using its plain gray or brown colouring to conceal it in thick undergrowth.

7/8

Upland sandpiper

The Upland sandpiper is a gracile shorebird that is oddly a grasslands forerunner rather than a wetland. It lives in North America, and is characterised by the long neck and tiny head, and a wolf-whistle call. This animal grows in the open prairies and can be found sitting on the fence posts during the breeding season.

8/8

Undulated tinamou

The Undulated tinamou is a shy, ground-dwelling bird found in the forests and savannas of South America. Known for its soft brown plumage marked with wavy (“undulated”) patterns, it is excellent at blending into leaf litter. Tinamous are ancient birds and strong runners, preferring to escape on foot rather than by flight.

Although names of birds that start with U are the rarest, these seven species represent a rich colour palette, habitats, and behaviour. When we learn about them, we understand how valuable nature is and how we need to preserve these special species and their environment.
