5 astonishing facts about Cambodia’s Angkor Wat that will leave you speechless

Calling Cambodia’s Angkor Wat one of the most significant archaeological discoveries won’t be incorrect! This South-East Asian gem, set in the heart of Cambodia, is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has been capturing the attention of travellers from across the globe. Being an iconic travel attraction, this awe-inspiring temple complex near Siem Reap offers several photo opp and is packed with secrets, history, and cultural marvels.
On this note, let’s have a look at 5 mind-blowing facts about Angkor Wat that will leave you speechless:

2/6

It was originally a Hindu temple

Do you know that Angkor Wat, though considered a symbol of Buddhism today, was originally a Hindu temple? This 12th century temple was dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple was commissioned by King Suryavarman II, and in years, Angkor Wat gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple. The transformation can be seen in the carvings and statues dotted throughout the complex.
Tip: Don’t miss out on witnessing depictions of important religious events such as churning of the ocean of milk.

3/6

No modern tools were used

Once here, you’ll be shocked to know that this massive building was built without any use of modern tools. The entire stone city was constructed without cranes and cement. More than 5 million tons of sandstone were moved using quarries over 50 kilometers away. As per historians, a canal system helped transport the heavy blocks. The precision of the carvings and the massive scale make this ancient feat of engineering even more impressive.
Don’t Miss: The stunning gallery walls featuring intricate carvings and mythological scenes, all carved by hand over 800 years ago.

4/6

Alignment with the sun and stars

This is another amazing fact about this temple! Angkor Wat is not just an architectural marvel but is also astronomically aligned. Make sure you plan a trip during the spring or autumn equinox, when you’ll be able to see the sun rise directly over the central lotus-shaped tower, which looks absolutely otherworldly.

Best Time to Visit: Make sure you visit before sunrise to witness this magical alignment.

5/6

Home to more than 3,000 apsaras or celestial dancers

Oh yes, you read that right! All around Angkor Wat, you’ll find beautiful figures which are noted as apsaras or divine dancers from Hindu and Buddhist mythology. There are more than 3,000 sculptures, and no two look the same which is a unique fact. Each one features unique poses, jewellery, and expressions, showcasing the incredible attention to detail of the Khmer artisans.

6/6

A part of Cambodian flag

Angkor Wat is a part of the Cambodian flag which makes it all the more special and unique. It’s the only religious monument in the world to receive such an honour. It symbolises spiritual strength, national pride, and resilience and is a powerful reminder of Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage.
Fun Fact: You’ll also see it on Cambodian currency, souvenir shops, and even tuk-tuks!
