US turns 250: Where to witness best celebrations across South America in 2026

2026 is a landmark year for the USA as the country enters its 250th year since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, culminating in an exciting lineup of celebrations nationwide. From attending a Fourth of July parade in North Carolina to Missouri’s spectacular fireworks, from witnessing majestic ships in Louisiana to experiencing immersive airshows in Arkansas, or celebrating Mississippi’s patriotic community charm, it is the ideal time to explore the Southern states.

North Carolina

Fourth of July festivities in Southport are an endearing celebration of community and mark the city as home to one of the oldest Independence Day parades in the USA.

Southport has been at the centre of these celebrations for more than 220 years, and for the USA’s 250th anniversary, the city is gearing up for some of its biggest events ever. From watching patriotic boats parade down the Cape Fear River to taking part in immersive military exhibits, witnessing the powerful naturalisation ceremony, and attending a pro wrestling match, there is plenty to see and experience.

The week-long gala, running from June 26 to July 4, will also feature live music, local waterfront market stalls, a petting zoo, a kids’ zone, and several family-friendly activities, concluding with the festival’s iconic fireworks display.

Missouri

In Missouri, the Hermann FreedomFest 2026 Parade, Concert & Fireworks, scheduled from July 3–5 in the city of Hermann, is an annual Independence Day celebration featuring a fun-filled weekend of parades, games, food stalls, booths, and music at Riverfront Park and the Clara Eitmann Messmer Amphitheater.

For the Semiquincentennial celebrations, locals and visitors can enjoy a special concert and witness a spectacular fireworks display lighting up the riverfront after dark.

Louisiana

Gear up for one of the biggest events of the year as New Orleans becomes the first stop to welcome the tall ships of the world to the Port of New Orleans for a nationwide celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
From May 28 to June 1, New Orleans will celebrate America’s Semiquincentennial with the largest-ever flotilla of tall ships from around the world, creating a majestic nautical spectacle along the historic Mississippi River.

Alongside the ship displays, a diverse range of festivities, educational activities, and cultural events will take place across the region to entertain and engage audiences during this once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

Mississippi

Another example of community engagement and patriotism can be seen in Columbia through the premier Columbia Freedom Festival during the USA’s Fourth of July celebrations.
The annual event, set for June 27, brings downtown Columbia to life with vibrant live music, local vendors, fireworks, family-friendly activities, and a strong celebration of American heritage.

From the energy of the Liberty Stage to the charm of the Americana Market, the festival is rooted in tradition and reflects the cultural spirit of Columbia. As an official partner event of Freedom250, the Columbia Freedom Festival is also part of a larger national movement honouring 250 years of American independence.

6/6

Arkansas, USA

As part of the 250-year celebrations in Arkansas, the Texarkana Airshow is returning for the first time in 30 years. The event is set to take place at the Texarkana Regional Airport in a joint effort by regional aviation, civic, and educational partners.

Scheduled for June 27, this immersive show is a must-visit for aviation enthusiasts of all ages. In addition to captivating aerial performances, acrobatic displays, formation flying, and military flyovers, the event will also pay tribute to Texarkana’s proud aviation history.

Visitors can also explore ground displays of historic aircraft and Harley-Davidson motorcycles, enjoy food vendors, and take part in additional family-friendly activities, with the airshow celebrations ultimately coinciding with America’s 250th anniversary on July 4.
