Which Australian Visa is right for you? A guide to 7 visitor and holiday visa options

If you have been planning a trip to Australia, choosing the right visa will help you to sort out one of the most concerning aspects of your travel. A dream destination for tourists, nature lovers, and backpackers, the country offers multiple visa options tailored to different travel goals. Here's a breakdown of the most popular visitor and holiday visa streams, based on information from the Australian High Commission’s official visa guidelines. (Canva)

Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) – Tourist Stream

If you're heading to Australia for a vacation, to see friends and family, or even join a cruise, the Tourist Stream is for you. This visa allows a stay of up to 12 months and costs from AUD 200. You must apply from outside Australia and show proof of sufficient funds. Importantly, this visa does not permit work.
What makes this visa appealing is its flexibility—it’s suitable for everything from leisure travel to extended family visits. However, you're expected to visit only, with no business or medical intentions. (Canva)

Visitor Visa – Business Visitor Stream

If your purpose is business, such as attending conferences, negotiating contracts, or making employment-related inquiries, you’ll want the Business Visitor Stream of the Subclass 600 visa. This visa is also priced at AUD 200 and allows a stay of up to 3 months.
Like the tourist stream, you must be outside Australia at the time of application and decision. While it supports business activities, you cannot be paid by Australian organisations to participate in events or take up work. (Canva)

4/8

Visitor Visa – Sponsored Family Stream

Planning to visit relatives in Australia? This visa allows you to stay for up to 12 months and is ideal if you’re being sponsored by a family member. The cost is AUD 200, but your sponsor may need to pay a security bond.
You can also holiday or take a short course (up to 3 months), but you must have an approved sponsor and apply from outside Australia. Note: if sponsorship isn't necessary, the Tourist Stream might be simpler. (Canva)

5/8

Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) – Subclass 601

The ETA is for travelers from eligible countries with ETA-compatible passports. It allows multiple entries over 12 months, with each stay lasting up to 3 months. While the visa itself is free, there's a AUD 20 service fee to apply via the official app.
The ETA covers both tourism and business visitor activities and is convenient for frequent flyers or short stays. You must apply from outside Australia and use the Australian ETA app. (Canva)

eVisitor Visa – Subclass 651

Another convenient option for eligible passport holders is the eVisitor visa, which also allows multiple entries over 12 months, with stays of up to 3 months each. The bonus? It’s completely free.
Like the ETA, it allows for tourism, short-term business activities, and even study or training for up to 3 months in some cases. This visa must also be applied for from outside Australia. (Canva)

7/8

Work and Holiday Visa – Subclass 462

Designed for young travelers (aged 18–30) from eligible countries including India, Vietnam, and China (who must enter a pre-application ballot), this visa allows a 12-month stay, with the opportunity to work and fund your holiday. The cost is AUD 670.
You can apply for a second and third Work and Holiday visa if you complete 3–6 months of specified work, such as agriculture or construction. (Canva)

8/8

Working Holiday Visa – Subclass 417

Similar to the 462 visa, but for travelers from a different list of eligible countries (some up to age 35), this visa also allows work and holiday travel for 12 months, at AUD 670.
Second and third Working Holiday visas require proof of completed specified work in regional areas. The extension process mirrors the 462 visa stream.
Note: Always refer to the official Australian immigration website before applying, as eligibility rules and fees may change. (Canva)
