Seetha Payanam Movie Review: an earnest intent within a dated narrative

By Susmita Sameera Seetha Payanam unfolds as a reflective road drama centred on Seetha (Aishwarya Arjun). She is the daughter of Rajendra Prasad (Sathyaraj), and their relationship forms the emotional foundation of the narrative. Having lost her mother in a childhood fire accident, Seetha shares a deeply attached bond with her father. In an attempt to fill the absence in their lives, she calls him “Amma,” while he calls her “Appa,” creating a quiet emotional exchange that defines their world. Seetha, a professional chef, travels to attend a workshop and meets Abhi (Niranjan Sudhindra). After a background check, she agrees to drop him off near his hometown. During their journey, they encounter a tea stall owner and her family, a fruit seller, a boy walking with his cow, and a tense moment at a traffic signal involving Giri (Arjun Sarja). These incidents appear minor at first but later become central to the narrative. As Seetha reaches the workshop venue, a massive fire erupts just seconds before she steps inside. The tragedy unfolds before her, and the brief delay prevents her from entering the building. Realising how narrowly she escaped, she decides to retrace her journey and personally thank each person whose small interruption caused that delay. The narrative then shifts into a reflective stretch shaped by these revisits and the conversations that follow. As the film moves toward its climax, the focus turns to Abhi’s identity and Seetha’s hesitation about marriage. She struggles with the thought of leaving her father alone, while he encourages her not to let his solitude determine her future. The story explores anxiety, unresolved grief, and the emotional complexities often experienced by a single child growing up with loss. However, the storytelling progresses at a slow pace, and several sequences feel extended beyond necessity. The emotional moments are presented dramatically, often appearing staged. Cameo appearances by Arjun Sarja and Dhruva Sarja are positioned as notable moments within the narrative, adding screen presence. However, the sequences surrounding them feel stretched, reducing their natural flow and impact. Prakash Raj, as Abhi’s grandfather, delivers an intense performance in a few effective scenes; however, the characterisation feels reminiscent of roles he has played in the past, offering little that is distinct or new. The performances align with the film’s dramatic tone. Aishwarya Arjun portrays Seetha with restraint and composure, while Niranjan Sudhindra delivers a charming and confident performance. The presence of senior actors adds weight to their respective characters. However, the emotional connection between the characters does not develop with the required depth. The music remains average, and the cinematography captures the road journey adequately without offering particularly striking visuals. Directed and produced by Arjun Sarja for his daughter, Seetha Payanam leans into an old-school style of storytelling reminiscent of family dramas from an earlier era. Its emotional intent is clear, but the execution feels deliberate and somewhat dated for contemporary audiences. Those who appreciate traditional, clean romantic family narratives may connect with its tone, while others may find the pacing and presentation distant from present-day realism.
