Afghanistan vs Bangladesh Highlights, T20 World Cup 2024: Afghanistan beat Bangladesh to enter semi-finals, Australia knocked out

Afghanistan vs Bangladesh, Super 8 T20 World Cup 2024: Afghanistan advanced to their first-ever T20 World Cup semi-final after securing a dramatic eight-run victory over Bangladesh in a rain-affected match at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St Vincent on Tuesday.

Despite defending a modest total of 115 for five on a challenging, bowler-friendly pitch, Afghan captain Rashid Khan excelled by taking four wickets for 23 runs. The match faced three rain stoppages, leading to a revised target of 114 runs off 19 overs. Bangladesh, needing a victory to have any chance of advancing, were ultimately dismissed for 105 runs in 17.5 overs.

Litton Das, who remained unbeaten with 54 runs, posed a significant threat to Afghanistan's defense and Australia’s chances of advancing on net run rate.

However, pacer Naveen-ul-Haq took the crucial last two wickets of Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman off consecutive deliveries in the penultimate over, sparking jubilant celebrations from the Afghan team.

Earlier, India's victory over Australia ensured India's place in the second semi-final against England in Guyana on Thursday. This result solidified Afghanistan's position as the second team from Group 1 to advance, eliminating both Australia and Bangladesh.

Afghanistan will now face South Africa in the first semi-final in Trinidad on Thursday.

With the race for the final T20 World Cup semi-final spot in Group 1 going down to the wire, all eyes are on the last Super 8 stage match of the tournament between Afghanistan and Bangladesh scheduled for Tuesday at the Arnos Vale Ground, Kingstown in Saint Vincent. After India beat Australia by 24 runs in St Lucia on Monday to seal the semis spot, the Afghanistan-Bangladesh encounter becomes a virtual quarter-final for the Afghans as they need to beat Bangla Tigers to set up semis with Group 2 toppers South Africa. India will now play defending champions England in Thursday's semi-final in Guyana.

AFG vs BAN Live Score: Advantage Afghanistan in St Vincent
That Afghanistan have the skills and mindset to excel in the format is not up for debate. They have proved that they are no longer a side reliant on just their bowling unit to eke out victories. Openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz, the leading run-getter, and Ibrahim Zadran have set the tournament ablaze with their sensational hitting. Additionally, the Afghans are enjoying the conditions that the Caribbean pitches are offering. Having a plethora of quality all-rounders has only helped their cause. They will take on Bangladesh at the same venue where they defeated Australia and the spin-friendly conditions will aide them.

AFG vs BAN Live Score: Afghanistan are high on confidence
Afghanistan had augmented their chances of making their first-ever World Cup semifinal when they downed the mighty Australians on Saturday. Afghanistan will be high on confidence having exacted revenge from Australia for their ODI World Cup loss last year in Mumbai. The Afghans would fancy their chances against a down-and-out Bangladesh, who seemed happy just to progress to the Super Eights.

AFG vs BAN Live Score: Bangladesh are also still in contention for semis
At the same time, Bangladesh, who lost both their matches in the Super Eights stage, hold the fate of former champions Australia in their hands. A win by 62 or more runs for Bangladesh, batting first, or getting over the line quickly — number of overs to do that would be determined by the target Afghanistan set — would propel the Najmul Hosain Shanto-led side into the semifinals. But a victory for Bangladesh by any lesser margin would see Australia, who have a NRR of -0.331, make it to the last four as Afghanistan would not be able to improve their NRR.

AFG vs BAN Live Score: A win or no-result will take Afghanistan to semis
The equation is simple for Rashid Khan's Afghanistan, who have a negative net run rate of -0.650. The Afghans will topple Australia from the second place in Group 1 if they beat Bangladesh and advance to the final four, irrespective of what their NRR is, since they will end up with four points. Even a no-result finish in the contest today would see Afghanistan qualifying for the semifinals, for they would get one point which would take their tally to three.

AFG vs BAN Live Score: Virtual quarter-final in St Vincent
The sprightly Afghanistan team will simply need to defeat Bangladesh in their last Super Eights match to qualify for the T20 World Cup semifinals today, following India's 24-run win over Australia. With India sealing the top spot on way to the semifinals, the other three teams can qualify as the second side from Group 1 since Afghanistan, Australia and Bangladesh have two points each.
