Australia rode on Josh Inglis' unbeaten century to beat England by five wickets to record the highest successful chase ever in any ICC 50-overs event, during their Champions Trophy match in Lahore on Saturday.

Australia vs England Cricket Live Score: PITFCH REPORT
Very pleasant from a player's point of view - just 21 degrees, might get cooler as the night goes on and a gentle breeze. Dimensions - 63m and 73m square boundaries, 74m downtown. Outfield looks absolutely magnificent, it'll be quick as lightning. This surface - it is an absolute road. It just looks fantastic. Has a nice covering of grass on it. It's really hard. The batters should prosper. If they don't, blame them.

Australia vs England Cricket Live Score: 'I have never said I don't want to play ODIs'
Ahead of England starting their 2025 Champions Trophy campaign against Australia, premier batter Joe Root said batting in ODIs is a different thing, as he can't think of any two innings in his career that have been exactly the same.

England come into the eight-team competition on the back of losing four consecutive ODI series, latest of which was a 3-0 defeat in India. "I can't think of any two innings that I have played that have been exactly the same."

"I think the art of batting is assessing the conditions in front of you, managing the situation that you're presented with and consistently making good decisions under pressure," Root was quoted as saying by BBC Sport on Friday.

With England’s ODI fortunes on a slide after making a league stage exit from 2023 ODI World Cup, Root stated that he’s still hungry to have more 50-over success internationally. "I never retired. I have never said I don't want to play the format. I don't think there needs to be either really. I don't think any player has a divine right for selection."

"Obviously you've got perform, you've got to consistently go and do your job and offer something to the team and make sure you're making it a better team, not holding it back. I've never been one to look too far ahead and try and say 'I want to play until here or to then'. You've got to earn the right and you've got to keep putting into the pot," he added.

Root signed off by calling for England’s players to be given more regular opportunities of playing the 50-over format and making a turnaround of fortunes in it. "It's just going to take something different. There isn't that opportunity to do that (play as regularly) nowadays but it doesn't mean we can't be as successful as that team."

"There's just different challenges that we're going to have to overcome. Can we find a way to speed that process up by having good, smart conversations and using our experience and share them so that when you get to the crunch moments within big games, you get the team across the line? I think we've got the right players that are able to do that and we've certainly got the talent."

Australia vs England Cricket Live Score: Watson picks Maxwell as 'stand-out' player
Former Australia cricketer Shane Watson has backed experienced all-rounder Glenn Maxwell to shine in the ICC Champions Trophy as the Aussies eye their third tournament title.

Despite being 36 years old and with over 250 international caps across all three formats, Maxwell's recent form in the Big Bash League, where he was one of the two Players of the Series, has led Watson to believe that his best cricket is still ahead of him.

Australia, the reigning 50-over World Cup champions and currently second in the ODI rankings, are set to face England. However, with only one win in their last five ODIs and key bowlers Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc absent from the squad, concerns have arisen about their ability to reclaim the trophy in Pakistan.

Nevertheless, Watson, a two-time ICC Men’s Champions Trophy winner and one of the four Event Ambassadors for the 2025 edition, is confident that Australia will remain a formidable team, especially if their explosive all-rounder delivers.

“The stand-out player for me is Glenn Maxwell. With what I have seen recently, especially in the Big Bash, I believe he has some of his best cricket in front of him across the next two or three years, and I would be very surprised if he does not dominate this Champions Trophy," ICC quoted Watson as saying.

“He had that incredible innings against Afghanistan in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, where he scored a double century, but he has struggled to be consistent at times. That’s the nature of his role in the team.

“However, it now just feels like it has all fallen into place for him, and that’s with everything in his life, not just his cricket, so I think he will play a pivotal part.

“I think Australia will be very hard to beat, even if their bowling squad is not quite as experienced as they might otherwise have been," he added.

Australia vs England Cricket Live Score: Australian pace contingent
The Australian pace contingent now comprises Sean Abbott, Spencer Johnson, Nathan Ellis and Ben Dwarshuis, with spinners Tanveer Sangha and Adam Zampa completing the bowling unit.

"England and Australia, there's always a great rivalry and a competitive match. And obviously, in the Champions Trophy format, each game is really a massive game," Buttler told reporters.

"So, we look forward to it."

Buttler confirmed Jofra Archer's fitness and readiness.

"He's been fit and firing now for... 18 months or so since being out of the game for a while. So, he's really excited to put together a performance," he said about the 29-year-old bowler.

Archer participated in all five T20Is against India but was absent from the final two ODIs preceding the Champions Trophy.

"He (Archer) is someone as a captain you always know you can turn to and throw the ball to," Buttler added. "He's obviously going to be really looking forward to the game tomorrow."

England revealed their playing eleven on Thursday evening, including Jamie Smith at number three, a decision supported by Buttler.

"He's obviously got the game technically and tactically, but I think the head on his shoulders seems to be one of the biggest strengths," he said.

"Nothing seems to faze him too much. I think you could ask him to bat anywhere in the line-up and it wouldn't phase him. We feel it gives him a nice position to try and really impact the game."

Australia vs England Cricket Live Score: Buttler not taking depleted Australia lightly
The English captain Jos Buttler anticipates a formidable contest against Australia in their Champions Trophy Group B fixture in Lahore on Saturday, despite the absence of key Australian pacers.

Australia's participation in the tournament has been significantly impacted after Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were sidelined due to ankle and hip injuries respectively.

Their situation worsened when Mitchell Starc withdrew for personal reasons, whilst Mitchell Marsh's back injury and Marcus Stoinis's unexpected retirement from ODIs further complicated matters.

Steve Smith will lead the side with a relatively new pace attack, though Buttler remains cautious about their traditional rivals.

"They have been a real pillar of success for Australia for a long period of time, so naturally there'll be a miss for their team," Buttler told a news conference on Friday.

"But they've got some top players to step into those shoes as well and Australia always over time have performed very well in ICC tournaments.

"We expect a really tough challenge."

Australia vs England Cricket Live Score: Australia the supreme competitors
Australia have been supreme competitors in ICC tournaments having won six ODI World Cup trophies, one T20 prize, two Champions Trophy titles and a World Test Championship.

"The pressure of big tournaments gets the best out of us as a team," said Smith.

"But over the last 10 or so years we haven't performed as we would have liked in the Champions Trophy. Our message to the group is essentially it's a quarter-final to begin proceedings and hopefully that can bring the best out of our players."

Both Australia and England come into the tournament at the back of series defeats to Sri Lanka and India.

Smith's team suffered a 2-0 ODI whitewash in Sri Lanka while England went down 3-0 in India.

"We both didn't play as well as we would have liked in the last couple of weeks but that doesn't mean a great deal coming into tomorrow," said Smith.

"I think it's a fresh start, it's a new tournament. two good teams going at it, so I am looking forward to it tomorrow, should be a good game."

England have announced their XI on Thursday with Jamie Smith to bat at number three position.

Smith said he will announce his team at the toss at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium, but hinted he will come out to bat with one wicket down.

Australia vs England Cricket Live Score: 'Chance for Australia's second line to shine'
Australia skipper Steve Smith on Friday said the team's up-and-coming talent is raring to go in the absence of top stars as they prepare to begin their Champions Trophy campaign against England.

The current ODI world champions suffered huge blows ahead of the 50-over tournament when they lost fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood to ankle and hip injuries respectively and Mitchell Starc, who is out due to personal reasons.

Mitchell Marsh is also absent with an injury and with Marcus Stoinis announcing his shock retirement from the one-day format last month, Australia will look depleted when they face Ashes rivals England in Lahore on Saturday.

The second line of pace bowlers including Sean Abbott, Ben Dwarshuis, Spencer Johnson and Nathan Ellis have just over 40 ODIs between them.

"It is clear we are missing our gun fast bowlers, but we are not worried about that," Smith told reporters.

"We are thinking about what we have got here and the opportunity those guys have. It's going to be great to see them placed under pressure against some quality oppositions and it is going to be an exciting time for us."

He added: "I think they have been placed under pressure, under many different scenarios, in T20 cricket or different T20 franchises around the world."

Australia vs England Cricket Live Score: England batting and bowling
England's response includes a pace trio of Jofra Archer, Mark Wood, and Brydon Carse, alongside Adil Rashid's spin bowling.

"They're pretty much all-out fast bowling with Adil (Rashid, the leg-spinner) being their banker – he's high quality, and doesn't go underrated in this room – but there's so much excitement around Wood, Jofra, Carse and (Gus) Atkinson," head told 'cricket.com.au'.

"We're going to have to make sure we start well against them. As an opening batter, how I can counteract that and how I play against that is a great challenge."

England's squad includes emerging wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith, likely to bat at number three.

Given the batting-friendly conditions, Ben Duckett, who impressed against India, aims to provide a strong foundation, while Joe Root serves as the batting linchpin.

Root, England's second-highest run-scorer behind Duckett in the India series, looks to deliver significant performances.

England, pursuing their first Champions Trophy title, are focusing on the present rather than their recent Indian tour struggles.

"Regardless of what happened in India, we've got that belief that we've got the talent, we've got the world-class players, the match-winners in the squad to win the tournament," Rashid said.

Australia vs England Cricket Live Score: Australia batting and bowling
Australia's bowling unit faces significant challenges without the services of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc, who are all unavailable for the tournament.

Additionally, they lack all-rounders Mitchell Marsh (back injury), Cameron Green (injury) and Marcus Stoinis, who unexpectedly retired from this format after being initially selected for the tournament.

Under these circumstances, it remains uncertain whether Australia, led by temporary captain Steve Smith, can achieve similar success in this condensed version of the World Cup.

With Marsh's absence, Smith is expected to occupy the number three position and shoulder significant batting responsibilities for the team that claimed this trophy in both 2006 and 2009.

Travis Head's performance will be closely monitored, following his impressive scores of 101 and 89 at this venue during their 2022 series.

Head's outstanding unbeaten 154 at Trent Bridge against England in last year's series makes him a key player to watch.

Australia vs England Cricket Live Score: Hello and welcome!
Hello and welcome to the Live coverage of ICC Champions Trophy match between Australia and England at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

An underperforming England and a depleted Australia aim to commence their Champions Trophy journey victoriously in what appears to be a balanced Group B fixture between the traditional rivals on Saturday.

Both sides have shown poor form in ODIs recently, with reigning champions Australia suffering defeats to Sri Lanka (0-2) and Pakistan (1-2) in their previous series.

England, now under Brendon McCullum's guidance across all formats, haven't secured an ODI series victory since their disappointing 2023 World Cup showing.

The team led by Jos Buttler recently endured a 0-3 loss to India, displaying subpar performance throughout the series.

Both nations are keen to establish their presence in this prestigious ICC event.

Australia prevailed over their rivals during their last encounter in England, securing a 3-2 victory in a five-match series in September last year.

The situation has since evolved, with the world champions missing five crucial players from their initial selection.
