Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka Highlights, Asia Cup 2025: Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by six wickets

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka Live Score, Asia Cup 2025: Bangladesh will look to build on their winning start when they meet Sri Lanka in a high-stakes Group B fixture of the Asia Cup in Abu Dhabi on Friday. The contest is expected to be decisive in the battle for semi-final qualification, with Afghanistan’s superior net run rate putting additional pressure on both sides.

In their opening game, Bangladesh registered a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Hong Kong. Captain Litton Das anchored the chase with a composed 59, but the performance exposed some concerns in the bowling unit. Taskin Ahmed and leg-spinner Rishad Hossain took wickets but also went for runs, an area Bangladesh can ill afford to repeat against stronger opposition.

Sri Lanka, under the leadership of Charith Asalanka, look well-equipped for UAE conditions. Their top order of Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis and Kusal Perera offers stability, while Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka and Kamindu Mendis bring power and versatility in the middle. The return of Janith Liyanage, who impressed in Zimbabwe with a match-winning knock, adds further options in the lower order.

The bowling is Sri Lanka’s biggest strength. Wanindu Hasaranga’s comeback from injury gives them a world-class spin trio alongside Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage. Slingy pacer Matheesha Pathirana provides variety and wicket-taking threat with the ball.

Bangladesh will count on Litton and Tawhid Hridoy to anchor the batting. Hridoy downplayed concerns over net run rate after the Hong Kong game, saying: “We want to beat Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, so run-rate isn’t what we are worried about at this stage.” He also acknowledged the challenges of the surface, noting the grip and slowness of the pitch.

With Afghanistan (NRR +4.700) far ahead of Bangladesh (+1.001), the pressure is not only to win but to win convincingly. If three teams finish on equal points, run rate could decide the group’s outcome.

Sri Lanka, with six Asia Cup titles, enter as favourites on paper. Bangladesh, still chasing their first crown, must deliver a disciplined display with bat and ball to keep their campaign on track.

The ball lands and just nips away a shy bit, teasing the batter to have a poke at it. Kusal Mendis gets half forward and tries to drive it through the off side, but the ball nibbles away and takes the thick, healthy outside edge. Goes flat and low towards the right of the keeper. Litton Das flings himself towards the ball and gathers a fine catch behind the wickets before tumbling down onto the ground. Kusal Mendis departs for 3 (6) and Sri Lanka are 13/1, needing another 127 runs to win off 109 balls.

Here we go...

22:03 (IST) Sep 13

... THE RUN CHASE ...

22:01 (IST) Sep 13

Now, it’s over to Sri Lanka’s batters, and while 140 might not look like a mountain, it can still be a tricky chase under the lights in Abu Dhabi. The ball has been gripping for the spinners, and the Bangladeshi seamers will look to exploit any movement upfront just like the Lankan quicks did earlier. A couple of early wickets could suddenly make this chase interesting, especially with the pressure of a tournament game and the pitch slowing down in the second innings. On the flip side, if Sri Lanka’s experienced top order settles in, they have more than enough firepower to make this chase a stroll. So, will we see another collapse like Bangladesh’s first half, or will Sri Lanka cruise home with authority? The chase is about to begin, so don't go anywhere.

22:00 (IST) Sep 13

A fightback then. Jaker and Shamim played with patience first and then authority, putting together an unbeaten 86-run stand for the sixth wicket. Shamim looked fluent, while Jaker was solid. The duo picked boundaries at the right moments, especially against Dasun Shanaka and Matheesha Pathirana, whose expensive spells shifted the momentum back. Even though Chameera came back brilliantly at the death with pinpoint yorkers, Bangladesh had done enough to drag themselves to a competitive total. From 53/5 to 139/5, it has been a rescue mission well executed.

21:58 (IST) Sep 13

Charith Asalanka won the toss and chose to field, and the new-ball bowlers responded with fire. Nuwan Thushara bowled a testing first over, making Tanzid Hasan look like a passenger before rattling his stumps. Dushmantha Chameera followed it up by removing Parvez Hossain Emon, and suddenly, Bangladesh were 0/2 after two consecutive Wicket-Maidens. Tawhid Hridoy’s nervy stay ended with a self-inflicted run-out, Mahedi Hasan was trapped by Wanindu Hasaranga, and when Litton Das fell after scratching around for 28, the scoreboard showed 53/5 inside 10 overs. At that point, Bangladesh looked like they’d struggle to even touch 100.

21:55 (IST) Sep 13

SCRAPPY AND GRITTY. That was an innings of two halves. Bangladesh stumbled horribly early, losing half their side for just 53, but thanks to a fighting 86-run partnership between Jaker Ali and Shamim Hossain, they clawed their way to 139/5, giving something to their bowlers to bowl. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s bowlers were superb for most of the night, yet they’ll feel they let things slip in the middle after such a dominating start.

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka Live Score, Asia Cup 2025: Bangladesh will face a stern challenge when they take on six-time champions Sri Lanka in a crucial Group B clash of the Asia Cup in Abu Dhabi on Friday. Both teams know the result could play a decisive role in shaping the group standings, with Afghanistan already enjoying a healthy advantage on net run rate.

Bangladesh began their campaign with a steady seven-wicket win over Hong Kong, skipper Litton Das leading from the front with 59. While the chase was comfortable, the bowling showed signs of vulnerability as Taskin Ahmed and Rishad Hossain leaked runs despite taking wickets.

Sri Lanka, led by Charith Asalanka, come in with pedigree and balance. The return of Wanindu Hasaranga from injury strengthens a spin department that already includes Maheesh Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage — a combination well-suited to UAE conditions. Matheesha Pathirana’s pace variation further boosts their attack.

Their batting also looks solid, with Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis and Kusal Perera providing stability at the top, while Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka and Kamindu Mendis add firepower in the middle. The recall of Janith Liyanage after three years gives extra depth to the lower order.

Bangladesh will hope Litton continues his form, with Tawhid Hridoy also a key figure after stressing that the team is focused on wins rather than net run rate. Mustafizur Rahman’s new-ball role will be crucial, especially on slow pitches where early breakthroughs could tilt the contest.

The match begins at 8 pm IST.
