The Kiwis ended the session on top but Pant somewhat salvaged the session with a decent 28-run unbeaten knock and helping India stretch their lead to 98. As India resumed the day on 64/2, Kyle Jamieson once again produced a menacing spell, getting rid of Kohli and Pujara early. While Kohli got out to a beautiful away-swinger, Pujara played a loose shot, handing Jamieson his second wicket of the session. Rahane and Pant then added crucial 37 runs for the fifth wicket but Boult then returned to dismiss the India vice-captain. Ravindra Jadeja (12*) and Pant kept the fight alive, adding 21 unbeaten runs before umpires called for the break.
