India vs New Zealand highlights, ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Final: India beat New Zealand by four wickets to clinch third Champions Trophy title

India vs New Zealand highlights, ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Final: Skipper Rohit Sharma led by example with a brilliant half-century as a determined India held their nerve to secure an unprecedented third Champions Trophy title, defeating New Zealand by four wickets in the final on Sunday.

Bowling first after Rohit endured his 12th consecutive toss loss, India’s spinners put on a masterclass, restricting New Zealand to 251/7 in 50 overs. Kuldeep Yadav (2/40) and Varun Chakaravarthy (2/45) were instrumental in applying the brakes on the Kiwi batting lineup.

Chasing 252, India got over the line with six balls to spare, thanks to key contributions from Rohit (76 off 83) and Shreyas Iyer (48 off 62).

For New Zealand, Daryl Mitchell (63 off 101), Michael Bracewell (53* off 40), and Rachin Ravindra (37 off 29) were the standout performers with the bat.

India faced a few tense moments in the chase, especially after being comfortably placed at 183/3 in the 38th over. However, KL Rahul (34* off 33) displayed remarkable composure to guide the team home, supported by a quickfire 18 from Hardik Pandya.

With this victory, India completed a flawless campaign, remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament—a testament to their dominance.

Having previously won the Champions Trophy in 2002 and 2013, India now stand alone as the only team to lift the prestigious title three times.

Champions Trophy 2025 Final: New Zealand in Dubai
Champions Trophy 2025 Final: New Zealand in Dubai

New Zealand have played three matches in Dubai and haven't triumphed in any of them. They lost one to Pakistan in 2014 and the other to India last Sunday. The third didn't produce a result.

So, New Zealand, who smashed 362/6 vs South Africa in Lahore on Wednesday, would have to brace for significantly different conditions. Kane Williamson acknowledged that they would have a challenge.

"The conditions are a lot different but you know that's sort of the nature of the beast. I think in any tournament that you have, conditions change a little bit throughout. For us, it was nice to have that last match against India.

"There's some really good bits there. India are an outstanding team and are playing really well. So, look, it's important we try and take away some learnings from that last game. Park this match, and in a final, anything can happen. And it was a great atmosphere last game and I'm sure it'll be a good one again."

Is it advantage India who played all four matches in Dubai? "It is what it is," said the veteran. "Our focus is the next match, the location of that match, the opposition, they're all factors. Obviously, we played India once there. The conditions are different, so it's important that we try and take away some of those positives and be nice and clear in how we're trying to operate come two- or three-days' time in the final. It's the nature of it and we're looking forward to the final and excited about it."

Champions Trophy 2025 Final: Eye on the coin in chase of the prize
India have not won the toss in ODIs since the semi-final of the 2023 World Cup (against New Zealand). That is a 14-match losing streak. Despite that, India have won 9, lost 4 and had one tie (vs Sri Lanka).

How much will it make a difference today? "I for one thought there would be a little bit more dew at this ground at this time of year. Fortunately there hasn't been. Therefore the toss is actually not a big factor and I think that's great," said former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson. "Heading into a Champions Trophy final you're not worried about who wins the toss and certainly if you're an Indian fan and the fact Rohit Sharma's lost 14 in a row, it's not something you're going to lose a whole heap of sleep over."

According to Hesson, Varun Chakaravarthy would be difficult to pick under the lights, should India bowl second. "I think at the toss, from a tactical point of view, New Zealand will want to bat first and they will want to do what they did against South Africa in the semifinal. The reason why I say that is because of this man here, Varun Chakaravarthy."

Champions Trophy 2025 Final: Shastri on Virat Kohli
Champions Trophy 2025 Final: Shastri on Virat Kohli

Ravi Shastri spoke about Virat Kohli in the latest episode of The ICC Review. The former India player, Director of Cricket and coach, who worked closely alongside Kohli, was asked what makes Kohli this good in the 50-over format.

“His discipline, his awareness of match situations (are what sets him apart),” Shastri told host Sanjana Ganesan.

“I thought he tried to get ahead of himself in the last three or four years, where he was trying to outdo what he's good at and sometimes, it can catch up on you.

“But he's back to what he does best, which is take the singles, hit the ball along the ground, if necessary, go for the big one. Some of the greatest players who played the one-day game, especially in the chase, are guys who can do that.

“When you pick up singles with ease, there's no pressure. And then when you have another guy at the other end, someone like Shreyas (Iyer) who comes and smacks it, it takes the pressure off, it becomes still easier.”

Kohli is keen on adding to his illustrious collection of trophies that includes the 2011 ODI World Cup, the 2013 Champions Trophy and the 2024 T20 World Cup

12:44 (IST) Mar 09
Virat Kohli can achieve multiple milestones today if he bats the way he has already this tournament. Kohli has scored 217 runs this tournament with a highest of an unbeaten 100 against Pakistan.

46 - Runs Kohli needs to surpass Chris Gayle and become the leading scorer in Champions Trophy history

11 - Runs Kohli needs to become leading scorer in this tournament

55 - Runs Kohli needs to become the second-highest scorer in ODI history, going past Sangakkara

India vs New Zealand Live Score: Are India 'desperate' for a title?
India ended their 13-year title drought last year with the T20 World Cup. Before that, India's last World Cup win was the 50-over tournament in 2011.

Now, as India enter the 2025 Champions Trophy title clash, they've keen on ending a 12-year drought of 50-over tournaments. The last success was coincidentally the 2013 Champions Trophy.

“Sometimes, once you get one title, that kind of breaks the jinx,” he told reporters at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on the eve of the final.

“It gives you the momentum. Also, you are not very desperate about getting the title. It’s not good when desperation kicks in. Then, it becomes hard to put the occasion out of the equation.

“In all these big matches, the players or the teams that can put aside the pressure and take the occasion out of the game have a better chance of winning.

“Winning the title in 2024 doesn’t mean that we are less hungry, but it makes us more balanced that, yes, we’ve won an ICC title, and we’ll try to do our best to win this one.

“It is my second ICC event for team India and second final [along with the 2023 defeat]. The last time, which we couldn’t do, we will try to do it this time.”

India vs New Zealand Live Score: Ashwin on player battle to watch
R Ashwin is most eager to see the matchup between Williamson and Jadeja.

"If you are a cricket connoisseur, then Kane Williamson vs. Ravindra Jadeja is the most fascinating battle. While facing Jadeja, Kane Williamson moves towards the leg stump because he knows Jaddu is troubling him. Sometimes, he steps out and plays the chip shot over the bowler or extra cover," he said.

"He even tries to play the cut shot on the back foot. It's a cat-and-mouse situation. Kane Williamson wants to get on top of Jadeja. On the other hand, Jaddu too varies his length and speed. They are like Tom and Jerry in the middle. This contest can decide the outcome of the game. It's a fascinating contest between Kane Williamson and Ravindra Jadeja," he added.

"Jaddu is quicker than an usual left-arm spinner. It is difficult to play the cut shot against Jaddu and literally impossible to sweep him. Yes, you can play the slog sweep, but you can't play the traditional sweep against Jadeja."

"Jaddu's advantage over Kane Williamson is that he never bowls slow against Kane Williamson and he also gets turn. It is because of his lovely release, high release point, and the revolution he puts on the ball," he added.

India vs New Zealand Live Score: Rachin Ravindra in numbers
Rachin Ravindra's numbers

in 2025 Champions Trophy: In four innings, he's scored 251 runs at a strike rate of 106, averaging 62.75. He’s scored two centuries, including a 108 off 101 balls in the semi-final against South Africa

in ICC events: Rachin averages 63.76 with the bat in ICC events, scoring at faster than a run-a-ball (106 strike rate)

“It's always great to bat with him,” Williamson said on Ravindra.

“He goes out and he puts the team first and he plays with that freedom. He's so gifted, really, really confident, clear in what he's trying to do. We've seen it on so many occasions, in big tournaments where he stood up and shone, and we've seen it here again in this one.

“Hopefully he can continue that moving forward into this next match. But a special talent, not only that but contribution with the ball too.

“We missed him while he had his little injury for a while there but just took a couple of weeks off and came back and is batting beautifully – great to watch.”
10:50 (IST) Mar 09
India vs New Zealand Live Score: Played in focus - Rachin Ravindra
Rachin Ravindra, 25, has developed a reputation as a big game hunter. Ravindra scored his fifth ODI hundred in the semi-finals against South Africa, and all five of those triple-figure knocks have come in ICC event competition. He saves his best for the big stage, and it certainly doesn't get much bigger than a Champions Trophy Final.

His contribution doesn't end with the bat, either. Captain Mitchell Santner will utilise Ravindra's left-arm orthodox in the middle overs, which could well prove pivotal on the Dubai deck.
10:45 (IST) Mar 09
India vs New Zealand Live Score: Played in focus - Mohammed Shami
It could be any one of the four slow bowlers - Axar, Jadeja, Varun, Kuldeep - that steps up and takes wickets through the mid-phase for India. But Shami's job as the opener is more distinct. He took three wickets against the Aussies, and if he generates any early-innings breakthroughs with the new ball, it'll send the Kiwis' batting plan off schedule

India vs New Zealand Live Score: Pitch talk

India and New Zealand will play on the same surface that was used for India vs Pakistan on Feb 23. India had won that match by six wickets.

Batting first after winning the toss, Pakistan folded for 241, with Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav emerging as the top wicket-taker with 3/40 in nine overs, while allrounder Hardik Pandya took 2/31 in eight overs.

India employed 26 overs of spin in that match (Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja were the other spinners), who went for 129 runs and fetched them five wickets.

India, in reply, chased down the target in just 42.3 overs, with Virat Kohli scoring his 51st century - a magnificent 100 not out off 111 balls. Shreyas Iyer (56) and Shubman Gill (46) also played crucial roles.

Pakistan’s best bowler, too, was a spinner: leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed, who conceded just 1-28 in 10 overs.

Champions Trophy final playing conditions

Is there a reserve day?

Even though the weather looks clear, is there a reserve day for the Champions Trophy final should an oddity occur and render the contest null today?

Yes there is a reserve day. If the match gets halted by adverse weather conditions, play will resume from where it left off on Monday. If there is no play possible on Monday either, the trophy will be shared.

How long will we wait for play to start?

Every attempt will be made to restart the match on Sunday itself. Up to two hours of additional time is available on both the original day and for the reserve day.

“If play is interrupted on the scheduled day, the umpires will utilize the extra time available and, if necessary, reduce the number of overs to try to reach a result on that day,” according to the playing conditions for the 2025 Champions Trophy final.

“In making decisions related to the ground, weather, and light, the umpires will aim to maximize play on the scheduled day of the match in order to achieve a result on that day, as if no reserve day were available.”

How many overs are required to be played?

For the result to be considered valid, both teams need to play at least 25 overs on match day or reserve day. If play does not resume by the cut-off time period on Sunday, it will move to Monday to try and meet this minimum criteria.

What if there is a tie?

If the match ends in a tie, with both teams on the same runs, then Super Overs will be played until an outcome is achieved.

IND vs NZ Live Score: How is the weather in Dubai

Dubai's scorching heat could play a decisive role in what the captain's decide at the toss. The temperatures are expected to hover around 32 degree Celsius but surprisingly for everyone, dew has not played a role despite the chill in the evening. So, bat first or second does not necessarily make a difference as far as the conditions go. There are no chances of rain throughout the day so expect a full game without any interruptions.

IND vs NZ Live Score: Is Matt Henry fit for the final?
New Zealand's front-line seamer, Matt Henry, sustained a shoulder injury during the semi-final against South Africa. He picked up the issue while taking a catch to dismiss Heinrich Klaasen.

Despite the injury, he bowled two overs later in the contest after getting treatment. He also dived in the field after his comeback, sparking optimism.

However concerns re-emerged before the final.

Even though Santner remained optimistic, coach Gary Stead took a more cautious route.

"The positive is that he (Henry) managed to get back out there and bowl," Stead said on Friday. "We've had some scans done, and we'll give him every chance to play in the final. However, at this stage, it's still a bit unclear.

"He's obviously quite sore from landing on the point of his shoulder. Hopefully, he will be okay.”

Henry is the tournament's leading wicket-taker with 10 scalps at an average of 16.70 across 4 matches. He took a fifer against India.

If Henry does not make it, New Zealand are likely to bring in right-arm seamer Jacob Duffy as a like-for-like replacement.

IND vs NZ Live Score: Champions Trophy final preview
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Champions Trophy Final! India will take on New Zealand in the final of the Champions Trophy 2025 final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium today in search of registering one more ICC trophy against their names.

Adding to the intrigue, these two teams have already met in the tournament, exactly a week ago, at the same venue, no less. This means strategies and adjustments will be firmly in focus as the Black Caps aim to correct what didn't work a week ago.

The match will be played in Dubai, which has hosted India's campaign. The pitch offers plenty for bowlers, particularly spinners, who loom large in both lineups for the big contest. More on the spin challenge, for both teams, in a bit.
India vs New Zealand highlights, Champions Trophy Final: Indian team stalwart Virat Kohli was one of the happiest players after the ICC Champions Trophy final win against New Zealand not because they won the silverware but also due to the depth they possess in their squad. Kohli said that India have the squad that can take on the world for the next eight years.

Captain Rohit Sharma's 76-run knock set the tone of India's 252 chase while Shreyas Iyer's 48 and KL Rahul's unbeaten 34 guided the side over the line with one over to spare. Axar Patel (29) and Hardik Pandya (18) also contributed cameo innings to take the side closer to victory in a pulsating encounter.

"It's been amazing, we wanted to bounce back after a tough Australian tour, and wanted to win a big tournament, so to win the Champions Trophy is amazing. So much talent in the dressing room, they're trying to take their game further and we're just happy to be of help (role of the seniors), sharing our experience and that's what makes this Indian team so strong," Kohli said after the match.

"These are the things you want to play (for titles), playing under pressure and putting your hand up. The whole team, everyone has put their hands up sometimes or other (during the course of the tournament), everyone has put up impactful performances, we've been part of an amazing team, the amount of work we've done in the practice sessions, it feels great (to win).

"When you leave, you want to leave the team in a better place, I feel we've a squad that's ready to take on the world for the next 8 years. Shubman has been outstanding, Shreyas has played some top knocks, KL has finished games and Hardik has been superb with the bat," he added.

The 36-year-old lauded the grit and determination of New Zealand and praised their attacking and competitive nature.

"Amazing (on the New Zealand team), we've always been in awe with what they can do, the limited number of players in the talent pool, but they just execute plans so well, they keep playing the kind of cricket that keeps them very much in the game. They're always been attacking and supportive of the bowlers.

"Credit to them, easily the best fielding unit, sad to see a very good friend of mine to be on the losing side (on Kane Wiliamson), but they're always so good and they keep doing the basics well. That's what makes them such a competitive unit," Kohli said.

It was India's third Champions Trophy title - the most by any team in the eight-team tournament.
