Mitchell Santner comes for the post-match chat with the host broadcaster: "It’s a great feeling to put ourselves in a position of winning a Test match here. It doesn’t look easy and we knew partnerships were key, glad we could perform well today. We spoke about trying to find the right speed on this wicket, as the day went along the slower ones started to spin and it was about trying to put it in the right areas. (On bowling wide of the crease) Just tried to change the angles, induce the play and miss and vary it out. I watched Washi go wide of the crease earlier, tried to do the same. (On performing well in India) I guess the pitches spin, which is nice. We don’t get that back home. The pitches here provide some good assistance for the spinners. I think the pitch is doing a little bit, it is not easy but we spoke about trying to fire shots and not sit there trying to scratch it out. On the flip side, I think when we bowl in the second innings, India will also try to place some shots. We just need to be accurate."

Would not have said this when the series started but New Zealand are overwhelming favourites to clinch this now. Been an incredible day for the visitors and a sorry show by the host batters. Sensational spell from Mitchell Santner as India were bundled out for 156 and secured a big first innings lead of 103 runs. The batters then came out with positive intent and stretched the lead over 300 runs which looks massive on this pitch. And they still have five wickets in hand

He fires his 30th Test half-century off 82 balls and has been absolutely superb in this second innings. Latham is taking the game and series away from India! After scoring 15, 0 and 15 in the first three innings of the series, Latham finds form at the perfect time. Gets to his fifty with a comfortable single off Washington Sundar. New Zealand 85/2 in 20 overs, lead by 188 runs

A spectacular seven-wicket haul by Mitchell Santner helped New Zealand dismiss India for 156 before the tourists reached 85-2 at tea on day two of the second test in Pune on Friday to tighten their grip on the three-match series.

Tom Latham was batting on 37 and Rachin Ravindra was unbeaten on seven as the Black Caps, who won the opening match by eight wickets, extended their lead to 188 runs at the break after scoring 259 in the first innings.

Washington Sundar sent back Devon Conway for 17 while Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Will Young for 23 but runs came too easily for New Zealand, who are eyeing a strong total to boost their chances of a maiden series win in India.

India are seeking a 19th straight home series victory since a 2-1 defeat by England in 2012, but will need a battling effort to draw level with New Zealand ahead of the finale in Mumbai early next month.

Santner had earlier posted career-best figures of 7-53 while Glenn Phillips took 2-26 as spin bowlers continued to excel at Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, where Washington bagged 7-59 on the first day.

The hosts resumed on 16-1 after losing captain Rohit Sharma for a nine-ball duck, and Shubman Gill was fortunate to survive a loud appeal for lbw on the third ball of the morning from Santner when he was on 10.

Back in the side after missing the series-opening defeat in Bengaluru due to a stiff neck, Gill shrugged off the early scare and went on the attack by lofting paceman Tim Southee for a six.

Santner trapped Gill plumb in front for 30 and the left-armer struck again by bowling out Virat Kohli for one with an inviting full toss that the batsman missed completely, as two quick strikes rattled India.

Yashasvi Jaiswal drove and swept the bowlers and appeared a lot more at ease at the other end, although the left-hander was lucky his slog sweep off Ajaz Patel fell in no man's land when he was on 16.

Daryl Mitchell pulled off a sharp catch at slip as Phillips dismissed Jaiswal for 30 and the tourists could have had another had the fielder held onto a tough chance when Santner forced an edge off Sarfaraz Khan's blade.

Rishabh Pant was castled for 18 by Phillips after a loose shot and Santner had Sarfaraz caught for 11 to leave India on the ropes at 95-6, with both their batting heroes from the opening game back in the dugout.

Santner trapped Ashwin lbw for four and removed Ravindra Jadeja in similar fashion after the batsman made a defiant 38, before getting one to go through Akash Deep's defence.

He then snared Jasprit Bumrah for a duck to ensure that New Zealand would begin their second innings with a lead of 103 runs, leaving India needing a big bowling effort to prevent the game from slipping away further.

The visitors now have a 188-run lead on second day as they tighten their grip on the match.

After a poor performance with the bat, which saw India being skittled out for 156 in their first innings, the hosts needed quick wickets in the session. R Ashwinand Washington Sundar did manage a wicket apiece but the Kiwi batters scored over 4 RPO in the session, stunning India with their attack.

OUT! Veteran R Ashwin returns and strikes straightaway. Will Young, looking to play an Ashwin length ball on the backfoot, misses and gets trapped in front. Young reviewed it but it is unsuccessful. Ashwin breaks the threatening 42-run stand. NZ 78/2 in 18.3 overs, lead by 181 runs.

R Ashwin almost got the early breakthrough India were looking for. Tom Latham was looking to sweep an Ashwin but it slid straight with the arm and went under the Latham's bat. The original decision from the umpire was not out and India sent it upstairs. Ball-tracking shows that the impact is umpire's call. India get unlucky as Virat Kohli was seen fuming at the decision after it was shown on the giant screen. Ashwin too had a couple of words with the umpire on his way back to the bowling mark. India's star-studded batting line-up could not stand up to the challenge posed by New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner as the hosts were bundled out for 156 in 45.3 overs, giving the Tom Latham-led side a crucial first-innings lead of 103 runs on the the second day of the second Test in Pune on Friday.

Left-arm spinner Santner (7/53 in 19.3 overs) and off-spinner Glenn Phillips (2/26 in 6 overs) took nine wickets to demolish India after the hosts had looked comfortable at 50 for one.

Shubman Gill (30) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (30) had added 49 for the second wicket before six wickets fell for the addition of 53 runs as India were left tottering at 107 for 7 at lunch.

Santner then returned in the post-lunch session to dismiss Ravindra Jadeja and Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah cheaply.

Virat Kohli played the most forgettable shot of the morning to be clean bowled for 1.
