India vs South Africa Highlights, 2nd T20I: Hendricks, Markram blitz help South Africa beat India by 5 wickets

South Africa defeated India by five wickets in the second T20 International in Gqeberha on Tuesday.

Sent into bat, India posted 180 for 7 before the hosts were set a revised target of 152 in in 15 overs following a spell of rain.

India were going all guns blazing before rain stopped play with three balls left in the innings.

Skipper Suryakumar Yadav (56 off 36) and Rinku Singh (68 batting off 39) made fifties.

Chasing the revised target, South Africa reached home in 13.5 overs, scoring 154 for 5.

Reeza Hendricks (49) and skipper Aiden Markram (30) made substantial contributions for South Africa.

Brief Scores:

India: 180 for 7 (Rinku Singh 68 not out, Suryakumar Yadav 56; Aiden Markram 1/29, Tabraiz Shamsi 1/18).

South Africa:154 for 5 in 13.5 overs ( Reeza Hendricks 49; Mukesh Kumar 2/34).

OUT! India three down now inside the Powerplay! Gerald Coetzee ends the dangerous-looking 49-run stand. Coetzee bowls short and wide and Tilak Varma went for the upper-cut. Hits the ball straight down the throat of Marco Jansen at third-man.

SIX! A lovely pick-up shot yet again from Suryakumar Yadav and the ball sails over the deep fence. As Surya ends Lizaad Williams' second over with a maximum, fifty also is up for India in just 5 overs. This has been a terrific recovery from Surya and Tilak Varma after India lost both openers for ducks. The drizzle is back but play continues!

6 0 4 0 0 N4 4 - Tilak Varma takes on Marco Jansen in his second over. 19 runs came off it as Tilak finds 4 boundaries in it. A six and a couple of fours on the on-side and 1 was hit on the off-side. Bowling change from the other end as Gerald Coetzee replaces Lizaad Williams.

We are going to bowl first, been under the covers for most of the day, so I would assume it would move around a bit. Each game becomes important for us to fine tune things before the 2024 T20 WC, hopefully we can start well today. From my point of view it's about understanding if someone needs a rest. No debuts today.

The only other series India play before the World Cup is against Afghanistan at home next month. The selectors will be forced to consider only IPL performance for World Cup selection, raising questions over the scheduling of India's T20 commitments before the World Cup.

The nature of cricket is that series come thick and fast and there’ll be times when new guys are in and they are going to have to find their feet quickly, and we are going to do our best to help them settle down and be as relaxed as they can be in the environment. It’s a tricky one but the group we have here is a great bunch of guys.

The guys I’m watching in T20 cricket right now are very expressive. They don’t have a lot of fear of failure. Whatever happens — if they do well or if they don’t get runs on that given day — their attitude remains the same on and off the field. That balance is really important when you play this sport.

Proteas too race against time!
Like India, South Africa too have only five games left to identity their core for the World Cup. Pace duo of Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee were only picked for the first two games. Now with the series-opener washed out, they will only get a single outing before shifting focus to red ball cricket.

Quite a few questions!
Shubman Gill, who was not part of the T20 series against Australia held right after the World Cup, Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh seem to be the only certainties in the batting order for the ICC event six months later. Both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad have got runs under their belt but if Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma make themselves available for the World Cup, the two fringe players would need a sensational effort in the IPL to make the cut.

Time for auditions running out
Now only five games are left in the build up to the T20 World Cup in June and the management has a very small window to try out players. In the current scenario, form in the IPL will carry a lot of weight for selection in the Indian team bound for USA and Caribbean. The selectors announced a 17-man squad for the series and it is highly unlikely that all of them would get an opportunity in the remaining two games.

After a washout in the series-opener robbed the auditioning Indian youngsters of valuable game time, the think tank will be hoping for clear weather in Gqeberha. Even the toss could not be held in Durban on Sunday and there is a rain forecast even for the second game of the three-match series.
