... THE RUN CHASE ...
While the target of 239 may not appear insurmountable, Ireland Women will carry a great deal of confidence and momentum into the second half. Their spirited batting performance has set the tone, and they’ll come out strong and aggressive, looking to put the Indian batters under immediate pressure. For India, Smriti Mandhana will have a crucial role to play as the anchor of this chase, with much of the responsibility resting on her shoulders. That said, it’s shaping up to be an exciting second half of the match. Buckle up, the action is just moments away
Leah Paul, the other star of the innings, is up for a quick chat. She says that she is happy with her performance and thinks that it is a good total to defend. Adds that Gaby is very calm and handles the pressure very well and appreciates the way she plays. Adds that they were setting small targets in their partnership and stuck to their plan. Concludes that the game plan has worked for her today as she kept it simple throughout the innings.
While a lot went wrong for India in the field, it’s the dropped opportunities that will sting them the most. The inconsistency in their bowling added pressure, but when chances finally came their way, they failed to capitalize, letting Ireland off the hook. Saima Thakor was the pick of the bowlers but the wickets column doesn't quite do justice to the way she bowled.
Gaby and Leah not only steadied the Irish innings but showcased a counterattacking masterclass, stitching together a crucial 117-run partnership that dragged their team out of trouble. Both batters brought up well-deserved half-centuries. However, their flourishing stand was cut short by an unfortunate mix-up that resulted in Leah’s dismissal. Gaby, determined to keep the momentum going, fought valiantly in the sweltering heat, anchoring the innings but the conditions eventually took their toll. She fell agonizingly short of a well-deserved century, dismissed for an exceptional 92.
However, just as India Women looked poised to tighten their grip, Irish skipper Gaby Lewis along with Leah Paul turned the tables around. The pair displayed incredible composure punishing the Indian bowlers for straying from their plans. With no significant assistance from the pitch, India's inability to maintain tight lines only compounded their struggles, allowing the Irish duo to settle in.
The Irish openers came out with a clear mindset, capitalizing on every error in line and length from the inexperienced Indian pace attack. India managed to draw first blood with the dismissal of Sarah Forbes, which triggered a mini-collapse, leaving Ireland in a precarious position at 56/4.
With the odds heavily stacked against them heading into their first bilateral series in India, Ireland Women have delivered a commendable performance with the bat, proving they are not a side to be underestimated. Their intent and resilience have been exceptional, enabling them to set a competitive total of 238 runs despite a shaky start.
