That's a wrap from Guwahati - Three games into the 19th season, and all three times, the team chasing has emerged victorious. Well, it is time to sign off from here, but the party in the IPL 2026 has just begun, as up next on Tuesday, 31st March, it will be the Punjab Kings who will kick off their campaign against the Gujarat Titans in Mullanpur. They face the Punjab Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Friday, 3rd April. As for the Rajasthan Royals, they will take a long flight to Ahmedabad to face their neighbours, the Gujarat Titans, on Saturday, 4th April. Both games will be played in the evening, at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT).

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Nandre Burger receives the award for his bowling figures of 2/26 in 4 overs. Says it feels good to contribute to the team and help them get off to a strong start. Reflecting on the conditions, he adds that winning the toss and bowling first worked perfectly in their favour. Having watched previous games and prepared accordingly, he feels the team was well set up to make the most of the opportunity. On the plan of bowling against Sanju Samson, Burger details that the aim was always simple - to get every batter out. He explains that it comes down to using his natural variations and guiding batters into playing shots in areas he wants them to target. Speaking about the dressing room atmosphere, he mentions that not much has changed. Adds that with the same coaching staff and a familiar environment, it is nice to see smiles around and start the tournament on a positive note.

We want to be a team that plays smart cricket - The captain of the Rajasthan Royals, Riyan Parag says he got a bit lucky with the toss, but adds that the team executed their plans really well. He mentions they knew moisture would play a role and is pleased with how the bowlers performed. Riyan highlights that a lot of preparation has gone into this season, with the ultimate goal of winning the trophy. He adds that they want to be a side that plays smart cricket, and is happy that everyone chipped in. The RR skipper speaks highly of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, mentioning that both he and Jurel were in awe of the way he was batting and are really happy to have him in the team. Parag confirms that the plan is to have Dhruv Jurel at number 3 and Shimron Hetmyer at number 5 this season, and hopes that it works well for them.

The man of the moment is up next - Vaibhav Sooryavanshi highlights that he kept his birthday celebrations simple, cutting the cake before heading to bed early to avoid the usual cake-smashing ritual. Speaking about his approach, he explains that the plan was to make the most of the field restrictions. He notes that the pitch was initially sticky, but as the ball got older, it started coming on nicely to the bat. On his batting approach, he adds that while he does think about defense, the strategy for this game was clear - to take the game on during the Powerplay, especially in a low-scoring contest where winning that phase is crucial. Sooryavanshi also mentions that the team management has told him to keep things simple, offering full backing and encouraging him to play his natural game. Says there was no overload of instructions hurled at him. He feels his preparation leading into the match was solid, and he executed his plans well.

Good to get the bad game out of the way early - The skipper of the Chennai Super Kings, Ruturaj Gaikwad says the conditions at the start were really tough, especially facing quality pace from Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger. He adds that even after that, the medium pacers and spinners found some assistance. RR restrict CSK to a low score - CSK's Powerplay struggles from last season continued as they slumped to 38/4 inside the first six overs, losing the likes of Gaikwad, Samson, and impact player Sarfaraz after that, a blow they never quite recovered from. On a surface that had spent considerable time under covers, there was enough in it for the quicks and Jofra Archer along with Nandre Burger made the most of it, picking two apiece and blowing the top order clinically. Ravindra Jadeja, donning the new colors, haunted his former side with a double strike. From there, it was all about damage control. Jamie Overton showed real fight in the lower order, absorbing a few blows and digging in as the highest scorer. He stitched a crucial stand with Kamboj for the final wicket to push CSK past 120 and give them something to bowl at.

A lot to ponder for the ones in yellow - It was only the first game, but the returns from CSK’s frontline bowlers were a real concern and gave them plenty to think about. Matt Henry leaked 40 in his three overs, while Noor was taken apart as well. The only bright spots with the ball were Anshul Kamboj, who picked up the only two wickets that fell, and Khaleel, who bowled with an economy of under a run a ball. Overall, it was one of those days where nothing went right for the Super Kings. They were defending a low total to begin with, but fielding lapses, including a couple of costly dropped chances, only made matters worse. The bowling plans never quite clicked either, as Sooryavanshi’s onslaught left them searching for answers, which they never really found.

A Sooryavanshi blitz in Guwahati - Almost a run-a-ball target of 128 to chase, all the Royals needed was a strong base, and they got one. Jaiswal had a rather scratchy start, but it was Vaibhav Sooryavanshi who kept punishing the CSK bowlers with clear intent. He smashed a 15-ball half-century for fun and truly made it remarkable. It almost felt as if the Royals were batting on a completely different surface as boundaries were raining all over. They chalked more than half the runs off in the Powerplay itself, with all ten wickets intact. Sooryavanshi's wham-bam-slam was eventually put to an end by Kamboj, who picked up a couple of wickets, but the damage was long done.

The Lions get hunted down, 'Royally' - A very comfortable win for the men in pink as they kick their campaign off in a commanding fashion. This extends RR's dominance over CSK to 9-2 in the last 11 games in the IPL. Riyan Parag, beginning his stint as full-time captain, starts with a smile in front of his home crowd and could not have asked for a better statement performance. It is a young CSK side in a phase of transition, clearly built around youth, but a defeat of this magnitude never feels good. In hindsight, though, it might serve as a timely reality check, arriving early enough in the season to recalibrate and respond.

Early damage too much for CSK to recover - Chennai's woes in the Powerplay from last season continued into this game. 4 wickets down in the Powerplay, and they never quite recovered from that early damage. With the pitch having been under covers, there was always expected to be some assistance for the quicks, and Jofra Archer and Nandre Burger did not disappoint, removing the openers inside the first three overs. CSK's hopes of a recovery were dashed by a double strike from Ravindra Jadeja, and it took a fighting knock from Jamie Overton to give them something to bowl at.

CSK fold for 127 - A job well done by the Rajasthan Royals. They did face resistance from the Super Kings after the 8th wicket fell on 82 in the 13th over, but Riyan Parag will still be pretty pleased with his side's effort. While some respectability was added to the total through Jamie Overton's knock, it will take some doing if the men in yellow are to defend this score.

And spotting a rather casual return from Shimron Hetmyer to the striker’s end, Overton attempts the second run and skates through to get back, but Dhruv Jurel collects the ball on the bounce and whips the bails off with Jamie short by a fair bit.
