Fresh start beckons - Up next on Monday, 30th March, the Rajasthan Royals go up against the Chennai Super Kings in Guwahati. Two teams that endured disappointing campaigns last season will be eager to turn a new leaf. The game will get underway at 2 pm GMT (7.30 pm IST), but as always, you can join us early for the build-up. See you then. Cheers!
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - In a game that saw 444 runs being scored, Shardul Thakur returned figures of 3 for 39 from his 4 overs. He says that it was a challenging situation when he came into bowl the 6th over, but he thrives in such situations. Adds that this venue has given him bitter and sweet memories. He was a net bowler here back in 2012, and is finally playing for the Mumbai Indians after a long wait. Shardul says that he would be more than happy to spend the rest of his career at MI. Reckons that the backing from the management and the skipper have been very helpful, and he feels pleased to represent the MI family. He ends by saying that the 'Lord' tag is given by the fans and that is how they show love towards him.
Happy that the money is off the back - The skipper of the Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya says it's been a long wait of 13 years to start the season with a win, and he is very glad the team has finally managed to do that. He adds that having seen how the wicket played, especially during Kolkata Knight Riders' powerplay, they knew it was a good batting surface and credits the bowlers for keeping things in check. Pandya mentions that 220 is always gettable if you get off to a strong start, and praises Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton for the start they provided. When asked how tough it was to choose between Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton, Hardik replies that de Kock is a top man and took the decision in his stride when Rickelton was picked ahead of him. He adds that the team backed Rickelton because of what he has done for the franchise in the past, and is glad that faith has paid off. Hardik shares that he told Thakur that it was time to stop hopping franchises and settle here for the rest of his career. Mentions that Shardul is someone with a big heart who is always looking to outthink the batters.
Time for the presentation ceremony...
Ryan Rickelton is up for a chat - Ryan says that he feels pretty good. Adds that finding the middle of the bat early on alongside Rohit was pretty special. Mentions that he thought Tilak said yes on his run out, and he could not get around Blessing, but also admits it was not the bowler's fault. Rickelton further adds that Sherfane Rutherford came up to him and said it was a solid knock. Says the surface had been used just a few weeks ago during the World Cup, so it wasn’t the easiest to get going on. It took a bit of time to adjust, but he felt he adapted well and made the most of the conditions once he got in.
A learning curve for the bowlers - The captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, Ajinkya Rahane says that he is feeling fine. Adds that he was suffering from a lot of cramps in both calves, but hopefully he will be okay. Mentions that he thought 220 was a good score, but MI batted really well, and it is a learning curve for their bowlers like Blessing, Tyagi and Vaibhav. Rahane reckons that when Green starts to bowl, their combination will get much better. On being asked why he can't bowl, he says that the question should be asked to Cricket Australia. Ends by saying that there were still a lot of positives, Tyagi bowled well, playing a game after a long time, and they will try to come back stronger in the next one.
A flying start, a muted finish - On not many nights, when a team scores 220, do you say they left a few runs out there, but it was one of those nights for KKR. The toss fell MI's way, and they opted to bowl first on a Wankhede surface that was greener than usual. Ajinkya Rahane and Finn Allen got Kolkata off to a flying start, and while Allen departed early, Rahane continued to anchor the innings with intent. MI brought the scoring rate down during the middle phase, before Angkrish Raghuvanshi injected life back into the innings, but the finish lacked the final flourish.
Set up and sealed - Not a single over in the chase went without a boundary, highlighting KKR's struggle to build any sustained pressure. The 148-run opening stand set it up for Mumbai, and cameos from Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya ensured there were no late twists in the chase.
Trump cards taken down - MI's Powerplay followed a similar pattern to KKR’s. After a watchful start in the first couple of overs, the floodgates opened, with Mumbai racing to 80 in the first six overs. The outcome largely hinged on the eight overs of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, but MI's openers took them on decisively. Varun conceded 48 runs from his four overs, while Narine went for 30 in his three.
Mumbai Indians break the hoodoo - For the first time after 2012, Mumbai have won their first game of an IPL season, and they have done so by pulling off their highest successful run chase in the league's history. The chase was pretty much a one-way traffic. With the opening pair motoring along, it seemed like MI would get the job done with plenty to spare. However, it was dragged to the final over, and if anything, that is something Kolkata Knight Riders can take a bit of heart from.
Anukul Roy to Naman Dhir, Four!FOUR! Naman Dhir hits the winning runs! MUMBAI INDIANS WIN BY 6 WICKETS. Anukul Roy drops it short and on off, Dhir stays back and muscles it past mid off for a boundary. MI finally break their opening game jinx after a gap of 14 years.

The ball rolls towards point and the batters get a leg bye. However, Tyagi looks interested and Angkrish Raghuvanshi signals to his skipper to take the review. The UltraEdge shows nothing and Ball Tracking shows it is just pitching outside leg. KKR lose the review.
A confident shout for LBW. Turned down by the umpire and KKR have taken the review. It has hit Tilak Varma in line, but where has it pitched? The ball has pitched just outside the line of the leg stump. The decision of NOT OUT stands.

Blessing Muzarabani hits the length hard and around off, Ryan punches it wide of long off. He turns around for the second but Tilak Varma sees the fielder get to the ball and sends his partner back. Rickelton tries to get in his crease, while Blessing gets in position to collect the ball without knowing where the batter is. Ryan has to get around him to get to the crease, but before he can do that, Anukul Roy hits the bullseye at the bowler's end. A much-needed wicket for KKR, but Ryan Rickelton has done his job here.
Direct hit! Ryan Rickelton is walking off. The decision has been given on-field by the umpire.
Blessing Muzarabani to Ryan Rickelton, No run.Slower one, short of a length and outside off, Ryan Rickelton only manages to stab it out to short cover.
Strategic Break! Mumbai Indians are very much ahead in the chase at the moment, and with a lot of firepower left, they will be confident of getting over the line. There was a phase where KKR slowed down, but MI made sure they didn't, and that is exactly proving to be the difference in this game. The only way Kolkata can make things interesting is by picking up a couple of wickets quickly, or else the result is pretty much inevitable here.
Kartik Tyagi to Tilak Varma, No run.Three dots to end the over! Tyagi nails the yorker, outside off. Varma jams it out to short third. 8 runs and a wicket from the over. Mumbai Indians need 38 runs in 30 balls.
