... THE RUN CHASE ...
It was the first outing as Delhi Capitals captain for Jemimah Rodrigues, and she opted to bowl first, but her side ended up conceding a hefty 195, a massive total by any measure. Things began well with Chinelle Henry striking early, but the real damage came from a couple of big partnerships that they allowed to build. Nandni Sharma was a bright spot with a couple of wickets, while Sree Charani also chipped in with one, but their execution at the death was far from ideal. As a result, the batters now have a stiff task ahead if they are to bag the two points. Join us in a bit for the second essay.
Nat Sciver-Brunt, one of the picks of the batters for Mumbai Indians, is up for a quick chat. She jokes about getting out, says she is finding new ways to get out. Adds she is happy to come back and change the script a bit tonight and is happy with the total. Mentions that there is a bit more pace on this wicket, yesterday there was a bit of a tennis ball bounce in the Powerplay when they batted. Reckons that she and Kaur gave themselves time so that they could cash in towards the end. Feels it is a good score. They aren't taking this lightly and need to pick wickets. On the last night spell, Nat admits she didn’t execute with the ball as she wanted to and adds that the plan is different today.
Losing Amelia Kerr for a golden duck was not on the cards for Mumbai Indians, but it did little to disrupt their plans. Nat Sciver-Brunt came in and batted brilliantly, first alongside G Kamalini to steady the innings, before the real shift in momentum arrived when the skipper joined her at the crease. The pair took their time initially, but after the first strategic break, they changed gears dramatically. Nat brought up a fine fifty and the duo added 66 runs together. After Nat’s dismissal, Harmanpreet Kaur took on the aggressor’s role, hitting all around the park, with Nicola Carey chipping in with a fiery cameo, before Kaur finished unbeaten on 74 off 42, her highest score against Delhi Capitals.
A superb batting display from Mumbai Indians, a marked improvement from their first game, with the big names stepping up when it mattered. Nat Sciver-Brunt played the anchor role to perfection, while Harmanpreet Kaur provided the finishing touch with a late flurry, as they plundered 52 runs in the final four overs, including a 19-run final over to post their highest-ever WPL total against Delhi Capitals.
