Europa League final, Manchester United vs Villarreal Score: Villarreal beat Man United 11-10 on penalties
Villarreal stunned Manchester United after a marathon penalty shoot-out, with goalkeeper David de Gea missing the last spot-kick, in the Europa League final to lift their first ever major trophy in Gdansk. It finished 1-1 after 120 minutes as Gerard Moreno put the unfancied Spaniards ahead in the 29th minute, before Edinson Cavani levelled early in the second half. But Villarreal won a remarkable shoot-out 11-10.

Manchester United again dominated the proceedings but failed to solve the Villarreal defence puzzle after Cavani scored the equaliser 10 minutes into the second half. Rashford missed a golden chance to make it 2-1 in the 70th minute. Other than that there were few clear chances for United too in the second half. Now 30 minutes of extra time will try to decide the winners, before shoot-out kicks in.
