Harry Maguire looks devastated after Thomas Tuchel snubs Manchester United star from England FIFA World Cup squad
Harry Maguire looked visibly upset after being left out of England’s squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. The Manchester United defender was seen arriving at Carrington training ground ahead of United’s final Premier League game against Brighton. The 33-year-old had believed he would travel with the national team after enjoying a strong season with United. He played an important role in helping the club secure Champions League qualification and was part of England’s most recent international camp.
The decision by England manager Thomas Tuchel shocked many supporters and former players. Maguire later shared his disappointment on social media and admitted he felt hurt by the decision. His wife Fern Hawkins and mother Zoe also publicly defended him. Tuchel later explained that the coaching staff decided to stay loyal to the defenders who had been part of the squad throughout the qualifying campaign. The omission of Maguire, along with stars like Phil Foden and Cole Palmer, quickly became one of the biggest talking points ahead of the tournament.
Harry Maguire admitted he was stunned after learning he would not be included in England’s final 26-man World Cup squad. The Manchester United centre-back believed his performances this season had earned him a place in the team. Maguire felt he could have played an important role for England during the tournament and said he was deeply disappointed by the manager’s decision. However, he still wished the squad success for the competition.
His wife Fern Hawkins also reacted emotionally to the news. She praised Maguire for his hard work during the season and suggested there was nothing more he could have done to secure his spot. Maguire’s mother Zoe was equally frustrated and openly criticised the decision on social media, saying her son deserved better treatment after his performances.
Tuchel later responded to Maguire’s comments and admitted he understood the defender’s frustration. The former Chelsea manager explained that he had already spoken privately with Maguire before the squad announcement. Tuchel said he respected Maguire’s honesty and acknowledged the defender had enjoyed an excellent campaign with Manchester United.
However, Tuchel insisted the coaching staff decided to remain loyal to the defenders who had helped England during previous international matches earlier in the season. He added that leadership and dressing-room chemistry also played a major role in the final squad selection.
England will now head into the FIFA World Cup with Marc Guehi, John Stones, Ezri Konsa, Jarell Quansah and Dan Burn as their main central defensive options.
