New Coding The Chaos episode explains magic of regenerative braking in Formula E
YouTuber Jeremiah Burton is back with the second episode of the Coding The Chaos series on YouTube, and this time he explains the concept of regenerative braking in Formula E. Burton, with the help of Formula E champion Lucas di Grassi and several technical experts from the paddock, breaks down regenerative braking in simple terms for fans. This braking technique is one of the key elements that makes Formula E such a unique racing concept.
Lucas di Grassi explains regenerative braking in the video, “Anything that moves requires braking, and braking is nothing more than transferring kinetic energy from the vehicle into something else. In electric vehicles, we transfer this energy through regenerative braking.”
A Lola Yamaha ABT race engineer further explains the deal-breaker in this technique, “We brake with both motors - one at the front and one at the rear. So basically, all the braking energy goes back into the battery. The team that does this best is the most efficient and the quickest.”
It is further explained that around 30–40% of the energy used in a race comes from regenerative braking. Formula E cars also feature hydraulic braking, commonly referred to as brake-by-wire systems.
The Formula E World Championship is currently in its 12th season. Six races have already been held, with 11 more to go before the season finale in August. The drivers are currently on a break and will return for Rounds 7 and 8 in Berlin. The Berlin double-header is scheduled for 1–3 May.
