Porsche unveils Formula E GEN4 car 975 RSE as Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Muller are impressed by its efficiency

The reigning Formula E Manufacturers’ World Champion, Porsche, unveiled its GEN4 car - the 975 RSE, on Monday. With a top speed of more than 330 km/h, the new Porsche boasts 600 kW (816 PS) of power, permanent all-wheel drive, and much more, making it one of the fastest Formula E cars on the circuit. Both Porsche drivers, Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Muller, were highly impressed with the car after testing it on track to its limits.

Porsche unveils 975 RSE GEN4 car

The 975 RSE car was introduced by Porsche on social media with the caption: “Meet the Porsche 975 RSE. Built to change the game, in every way.”
Pascal Wehrlein reacted to the post with raised hands and a heart emoji. His team-mate Nico Muller also responded with heart, rocket and lightning emojis, while Formula E acknowledged the car with lightning emojis.

What the Porsche drivers are saying about the 975 RSE car

Speaking about the new car, Pascal Wehrlein said, “The new Porsche 975 RSE is a really cool race car. The GEN4 is extremely fast and great fun for us drivers. I believe it will be a real eye-opener for many fans and critics. I also like the look of the 975 RSE. The aerodynamics make the car look uncompromising, and our livery for the test runs looks pretty good.”

Nico Muller was equally full of praise for the new GEN4 car. He said, “The 975 RSE and its competitors are a massive step forward for the sport. I’m a big fan of how aggressively you can drive it. Especially in qualifying, when everyone is pushing to the limit, it should be spectacular – particularly because of the strong acceleration out of corners. I’m glad I was involved in the simulator work from the beginning. Pascal and I share the testing duties, which is good because it allows us to tailor the 975 RSE precisely to our needs.”

Olivier Champenois, Technical Project Leader for Formula E at Porsche Motorsport, explained more about the car’s capabilities on track. “Within roughly a decade, Formula E has become so fast that aerodynamic downforce is now a necessity. However, downforce always comes with drag and increases energy consumption. To maintain a strong focus on efficiency, we use two different aero packages with distinct bodywork components: a low-downforce package with reduced drag for races, and a high-downforce package for qualifying, where energy consumption isn’t relevant. We are talking about up to 150 per cent more downforce compared to the GEN3 Evo,” he said.

The GEN4 cars will debut in Formula E Season 13 next year.
