Jurrien Timber will not play at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the Netherlands confirmed that the Arsenal defender has not recovered enough from his groin injury. “In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that Timber will leave the national team’s pre-camp in New York after the game against Uzbekistan. We’re with you, Jurrien.”

With Jurrien Timber withdrawing before the start of the tournament, Ronald Koeman was allowed to call up a replacement. The Netherlands boss selected Lutsharel Geertruida, who had initially been left out of the squad despite an impressive season.

Geertruida will now compete with Denzel Dumfries and Mats Wieffer for a place on the right side of the Dutch defense. He can also provide cover in central defense alongside Virgil van Dijk, Micky van de Ven and Jan Paul van Hecke.
