Why Jurrien Timber missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup could be the best possible outcome for Arsenal?
Jurrien Timber will not play at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after the Netherlands confirmed that the Arsenal defender has not recovered enough from his groin injury. The decision ends any hope of seeing the 24-year-old feature for his country in the tournament, but it could turn out to be good news for Arsenal ahead of the new season. Timber has been struggling with the injury since the March international break. Even so, he pushed hard to return and was able to feature in Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. He came off the bench in Budapest and played 54 minutes after replacing Cristhian Mosquera, showing signs that he was close to full fitness.
After that match, Timber joined Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad for the World Cup. However, he missed the friendly loss to Algeria because he was still not fully fit. On Monday, the Dutch national team confirmed that he would leave the squad and miss the tournament.
The Netherlands posted on X: “Jurrien Timber misses the 2026 World Cup. The 24-year-old defender has not recovered sufficiently from a groin injury to take part in the World Cup in a medically responsible manner.
“In consultation with the medical staff, it has therefore been decided that Timber will leave the national team’s pre-camp in New York after the game against Uzbekistan. We’re with you, Jurrien.”
With Jurrien Timber withdrawing before the start of the tournament, Ronald Koeman was allowed to call up a replacement. The Netherlands boss selected Lutsharel Geertruida, who had initially been left out of the squad despite an impressive season.
Geertruida will now compete with Denzel Dumfries and Mats Wieffer for a place on the right side of the Dutch defense. He can also provide cover in central defense alongside Virgil van Dijk, Micky van de Ven and Jan Paul van Hecke.
For the Netherlands, losing Timber is a major setback. The Arsenal defender has become one of the team’s most reliable players and can play in several positions across the back line.
For Arsenal, though, the situation looks very different. Timber was already carrying a serious injury, and a demanding World Cup schedule could have made the problem worse. Instead of playing through pain during a long tournament, he can now focus completely on recovery.
That gives Mikel Arteta a much better chance of having a fresh and fully fit Timber available when Arsenal begin preparations for the new campaign. While the defender will be disappointed to miss the biggest tournament in football, Arsenal may benefit from the extra recovery time in the months ahead.
