Brooks Koepka is finally speaking openly about the painful personal struggles he and his wife
Jena Sims faced away from golf. During the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania, the five-time major winner admitted that the couple’s heartbreaking miscarriage last year deeply affected their family life and also hurt him mentally during one of the toughest periods of his career. Koepka, who recently returned to the PGA Tour after leaving LIV Golf earlier this year, said things are now slowly getting better at home. After shooting a one-under-par 69 in the opening round on Thursday, the American golfer shared rare and emotional comments about how difficult last year was for both him and Sims.
“We had a lot of family issues go on last year,” Brooks Koepka told reporters. “That took a toll on me… and it definitely took a toll on Jena.”
The 36-year-old explained that the problems had nothing to do with golf itself. Instead, the emotional stress from their personal life made everything harder.
“That was kind of tough to deal with,” Koepka added. “At home it’s in a much better place. It’s easier to come out to work when everything at home lines up. Everything’s a lot better.”
He also said the fresh start on the PGA Tour has helped him mentally after a difficult 2025 season filled with emotional pain away from the course.
Brooks Koepka says miscarriage with wife Jena Sims affected family life and mental state
Back in October 2025, Brooks Koepka and Jena Sims shared the heartbreaking news that they had lost their baby at 16 weeks. The couple posted a sonogram picture on Instagram and spoke honestly about the grief they were feeling.
“At 16 weeks, we learned that our baby’s heart had stopped beating,” the couple wrote in their statement. “This is a grief no parent is ever prepared for. We are devastated, but remain hopeful to give Crew a sibling one day.”
They also used the moment to support other families dealing with pregnancy loss and infertility.
“Too often, these struggles happen in silence,” they added. “If you’re experiencing or have experienced pregnancy loss or infertility, please know you are not alone.”
Brooks Koepka and Jena Sims already share a two-year-old son named Crew. Since getting married in Turks and Caicos in June 2022, the couple have often shared family moments together publicly.
While Koepka focused on the PGA Championship this week, Jena Sims attended the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit party in Manhattan on Thursday night. She later shared pictures and videos from the event on Instagram. It is still unclear whether she will travel to Pennsylvania during the tournament, but Sims has regularly supported Koepka at events throughout his career.
For Koepka, though, this week was less about golf scores and more about finally admitting how much pain he carried over the last year. His honest words gave fans a rare look into the difficult personal side of his life that usually stays private.
