How to pronounce Alysa Liu’s name? Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu finally reveals correct way after Milano Cortina Winter Olympics fame
Alysa Liu has been one of the most talked-about athletes after her big moment at the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics. The 20-year-old American figure skater won two gold medals and suddenly found herself everywhere, on TV shows, social media, and in sports headlines around the world. But while people were celebrating her Olympic success, there was one small detail almost everyone kept getting wrong: how to say her name. In a recent interview with Newsweek, Alysa Liu shared that most fans and even media outlets have been pronouncing her last name incorrectly for years. She explained that while she does not get upset about it, the real pronunciation is actually different from what many people say.
Alysa Liu made history at the Milano-Cortina Games by becoming the first American woman in 24 years to win the Olympic gold medal in women’s singles figure skating. Her strong performances helped Team USA win the team event as well. Along the way, she defeated top Japanese skaters Kaori Sakamoto and Ami Nakai, which made her victory even more memorable. Now, as fans continue to celebrate her Olympic success, Alysa Liu has decided to finally explain the correct way to say her name.
During the interview with Newsweek, Alysa Liu calmly explained how her name should really sound.
“Technically, this is how my family says my name: ‘Ah-Lee-sa Lee-Oh,’” Liu said.
However, she also admitted that people around the world usually say it differently.
“‘Ah-Li-sa’ is how my friends call me. And that’s how the world calls me,” she said.
The biggest confusion comes with her last name. Many people say “Lee-Ooh” or even “Lu.” Liu said she understands why people get confused and does not expect everyone to say it perfectly.
“And then my last name, a lot of people call me ‘Lee-Ooh’ or ‘Lu,’” Liu explained.
“I personally don’t care. It can be hard to pronounce. I don’t expect people to know how to say that. But technically my name is ‘Ah-Lee-Sa Lee-Oh.’”
While Liu has been enjoying the spotlight after the Olympics, she also had an uncomfortable moment soon after returning home. She shared the experience on Instagram, explaining that a group of fans crowded her at the airport.
“So I land at the airport, and there’s a crowd waiting at the exit with cameras and things for me to sign,” she wrote.
“All up in my personal space. Someone chased me to my car bruh. Please do not do that to me.”
Despite the excitement around her Olympic success, Liu has decided not to compete in the upcoming World Figure Skating Championships scheduled in Prague later this month. Her name is no longer listed on the official website of the International Skating Union, though no reason for the withdrawal has been confirmed.
Earlier, actor Daniel Radcliffe even praised Liu during her appearance on The Today Show, showing how widely her Olympic performance has been noticed. For now, Alysa Liu remains one of the biggest stars to come out of the Milano-Cortina Games, and fans finally know how to say her name correctly.
