Team USA skier Ben Loomis narrowly avoids horror injury after leaf blower chaos at Winter Olympics

A shocking moment unfolded on the Olympic slopes, and Team USA skier Ben Loomis was at the center of it. The 27-year-old athlete narrowly avoided a serious injury when a misplaced leaf blower struck him just before a jump. The incident happened during the Nordic Combined Team Sprint event at the Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, where harsh weather had already made conditions difficult.

Heavy snowfall and blizzard-like winds forced officials to use leaf blowers to clear snow between jumps. But in a split second, one blower stayed in Loomis’ path as he rushed down the hill at high speed. What followed left commentators stunned and fans holding their breath. Somehow, Loomis kept control, completed his jump, and avoided disaster.

The scary scene quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the event. Even though no major injury occurred, the close call raised serious safety concerns and drew an apology from officials.

As Loomis sped toward the 120-meter drop, most workers quickly moved their equipment away. One blower, however, remained too close. Loomis crashed through it, and the machine hit his shoulder just before takeoff. Despite the impact, he stayed focused and completed the jump as planned.

Commentator Peter Jonsson reacted with concern, saying, “Geez, it could have ended in horror.” Loomis later explained the moment calmly. He said, “I’ve never experienced anything like this. Fortunately, it happened at the top, so I just tried to convince myself to make a good jump.” He added, “Luckily it only hit my shoulder. If it had hit me in the face, it would have been a completely different story.”

Competition director Lasse Ottesen admitted the mistake and issued an apology. He said, “It is very regrettable that we had an incident with Loomis. It was good that nothing more happened, but it should not happen. The person has apologized to the jury and FIS apologizes to the USA.”

Loomis competed alongside teammate Niclas Malacinski, and their combined score placed Team USA seventh after the ski jumping round. Following the cross-country race, Norway claimed the gold medal, Finland secured silver, and Austria earned bronze.

Even without a medal, Loomis’ narrow escape became a defining Olympic moment—one that highlighted both the danger of the sport and the athlete’s calm under pressure.
