Emma Raducanu is once again facing tough questions after another early loss and a fresh withdrawal in 2026. The British player, who shocked the world by winning the 2021 US Open, is still struggling to find steady form. Her latest setback came at Indian Wells, where Amanda Anisimova beat her 6-1, 6-1 in just 52 minutes. Soon after, Raducanu also pulled out of the Miami Open due to ongoing illness. At the same time, tennis legend Martina Navratilova has openly shared what she believes is holding Raducanu back. She pointed to one key issue that has followed Raducanu since her breakthrough win, constant changes in her coaching team.
Over the past few years, Raducanu has worked with several coaches, but none have stayed long. Her most recent coach, Francisco Roig, joined her in August last year. However, their partnership ended after the 2026 Australian Open. This has raised fresh concerns about stability in her career.
Martina Navratilova says Emma Raducanu must stay patient with coaches as illness forces Miami Open withdrawal
Martina Navratilova believes Emma Raducanu needs to slow down and trust the process instead of making quick changes. Speaking to Sky Sports, she explained that players need time with a coach to truly grow.
“You need somebody full-time. You don’t need to have a great coach all the time. Maybe somebody even part-time, which is kind of what she’s got. But you still have to stay consistent and get this person to get to know you, get the history and give them a chance to make a difference. You can’t expect results to come right away - that’s a long process,” Navratilova said.
She also added that too many changes can confuse a player. “You need to buy into the coach and stay there for a little bit longer. I think that’s the biggest mistake - she’s been through too many people and then you get so many different ideas and you don’t quite know which one to stick with.”
Meanwhile, Raducanu’s fitness has also been a big concern. Before Indian Wells, she played at the Qatar Open and Dubai Tennis Championships. In Doha, she had to stop her match against Camila Osorio midway due to illness. In Dubai, she again looked unwell and lost her opening match to Antonia Ruzic.
Because of these ongoing health issues, Raducanu has now decided to skip the Miami Open. Reports confirm that she is still dealing with post-viral symptoms. Her ranking, currently around World No. 23, is expected to drop slightly. For now, Emma Raducanu is likely to return during the clay season, hoping for a fresh start and better stability both on and off the court.
