A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the NASCAR world. A deadly house fire at a home owned by Denny Hamlin in Gaston County, North Carolina, has taken the life of his father and left his mother fighting for her life. Local officials confirmed that the fire broke out Sunday evening at a house near Stanley, on Blacksnake Road. According to WCNC, Denny Hamlin’s parents were living in the home at the time.
Gaston County EMS later confirmed that Hamlin’s father, Dennis Hamlin, died from injuries linked to the fire. His mother, Mary Lou Hamlin, was rushed to the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center in Winston-Salem, where she is being treated in critical condition. The fire caused major damage, with nearly half of the house already burning when firefighters arrived, as told to The Athletic by the local fire chief. Denny Hamlin has not yet made a public statement. Officials say the cause of the fire is still under investigation due to the home’s structural collapse.
Denny Hamlin’s parents Dennis Hamlin and Mary Lou Hamlin supported his NASCAR dream from the very start
Dennis Hamlin and Mary Lou Hamlin played a huge role in Denny Hamlin’s racing journey. According to The New York Times, both parents sold their own cars, a Ford and a Camaro, to help pay for his early racing costs. Their support started when Denny was just five years old.
Hamlin once spoke about his father’s sacrifices, saying in a full quote:
“He’s the one that got me into racing. He just took me to a race track when I was 5, then made all the sacrifices financially to keep me going. Sold everything they had. We almost lost our house a couple of times. Just tried to keep it all going. So I’m glad he was able to see 60. That was super important to me.”
Fire officials said more than 10 fire departments responded because the area had no nearby hydrants. One person was trapped inside the home but was later rescued. Two victims were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. One later died and was confirmed as Dennis Hamlin, aged 75, per FOX Sports NASCAR reporter Bob Pockrass.
The tragedy comes shortly after Hamlin and his business partner Michael Jordan reached a legal settlement with NASCAR over charter agreements, as reported by The Athletic. Hamlin, born in Tampa and raised in Virginia, has 60 NASCAR Cup Series wins and co-owns 23XI Racing while still racing for Joe Gibbs Racing.
