Mirra also tried other sports. He raced rallycross cars for Subaru Rally Team USA and did well, with his best result being fourth place in the 2013 Global RallyCross Championship. He also took part in Ironman triathlon races.

Dave Mirra was married to his wife Lauren, and they had two daughters together. He was known as a friendly person who loved BMX and encouraged young riders to take up the sport. On February 4, 2016, Dave was found dead in his truck in Greenville at age 41. Police said it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and his passing shocked fans everywhere.
After his death, doctors studied his brain and found he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a serious brain condition linked to repeated hits to the head during his BMX career. He became the first action sports athlete known to have this diagnosis.

Dave Mirra was honored after his death in many ways. He was inducted into the BMX Hall of Fame in 2016 for his significant impact on the sport.
In 2024, his family and friends unveiled a permanent statue of Dave at Jaycee Skatepark in Greenville, where he used to ride BMX. Efforts continue to keep his legacy alive, including organizations that help youth and action sports projects in his name.
