Burke and her wife, Savannah Burke, recently shared on Instagram that they are expecting their second child. While many fans, players, and fellow coaches celebrated the news, others responded with negative comments targeting the couple because they are a same-sex family.Burke addressed the backlash in a statement posted on social media. She said she expected some opinions because of her public role, but was saddened by the level of hostility directed at her family. The Wildcats coach made it clear that the announcement was not only about sharing personal news but also about showing other gay and lesbian couples that families like theirs exist and deserve support. Despite the criticism, Burke said she remains focused on her family and will continue living openly and honestly.

In her statement, Becky Burke said the announcement carried a bigger message beyond her own family.“Let me be VERY clear. Our announcement is about something much bigger than us. Representation matters. Visibility matters. As a public figure, I take great pride in representing my community and helping create that visibility.”
She added, “Our announcement is for people who have spent years wondering whether a future like this was possible for them. It’s about showing people in our community that families like ours exist, that they are real, and that they deserve to be celebrated too.”

Arizona coach receives support from basketball community

Even as criticism appeared online, Burke also received strong support. Fans, current players, former players, and coaches shared encouraging messages.Arizona State coach Stephanie Norman, who coached Burke during her playing days at Louisville, publicly backed her former player.“We may be rivals, but she is my player and my friend. She and Savannah are amazing parents!” Norman wrote on X. The support helped counter many of the negative reactions that followed the pregnancy announcement.

Some online users continued attacking the couple after the announcement. Critics questioned their decision to have another child and made harsh claims about their family.Among those commenting was OutKick contributor Jon Root, who wrote that “children deserve a mother and a father.” Burke quickly responded, writing, “Well as long as you are in Arizona you’ll be seeing a lot of these 2 moms.”

Rather than removing the post, Burke said she chose to stand firm. “At the end of the day, this isn’t about politics or proving a point,” she wrote. “My focus will remain where it belongs: on my growing family, our incredible support system and continuing to live authentically.”Burke thanked supporters for their kindness. The former Charleston, USC Upstate, and Buffalo head coach completed her first season at Arizona in 2025-26, leading the Wildcats to a 12-18 record.
