Aaron Judge’s Quiet Night Against Venezuela Sparks Backlash as Dave Portnoy Questions USA Captain’s Big Game Impact

Team USA’s loss in the World Baseball Classic final quickly turned into a bigger talking point, and Aaron Judge found himself at the center of it. The New York Yankees star had a tough night as USA lost 3-2 to Venezuela in Miami. Soon after the game, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy openly criticized Judge, saying the captain failed to step up when it mattered most.

Judge’s performance stood out for the wrong reasons. He went 0 for 4 at the plate and struck out three times as USA’s strong batting lineup struggled early in the game. For the first seven innings, the team managed only two hits, which made things even more difficult in such a high-pressure final. The loss also gave Venezuela their first World Baseball Classic title.

Dave Portnoy did not hold back after watching the game. Sharing his thoughts on X, he wrote, “I feel like you can physically see Aaron Judge’s body freeze up in big moments.” He then added another sharp line, “I wouldn’t wish being a Yankee fan on my worst enemy. Must be infuriating.”

This is not the first time Portnoy has spoken against Judge. Earlier in the tournament, he also reacted to Judge’s emotional speech to his teammates. Judge had said, “Sacrifice for your family at home. You’re sacrificing for your country and you’re sacrificing for the brothers in the trenches with you every single day. That’s what they all want us to do, fellas.”

He continued, “You know we’re down. We’re beat up a little bit, man. You know, lean into each other, man. We’re gonna lay it out on the line. And if we do that, we’re bringing the gold home. I’m telling you.” Portnoy dismissed that speech as well, writing, “Worst speech ever.”

On the field, things did not go as planned for USA. Bryce Harper gave fans hope in the eighth inning with a powerful home run that tied the game at 2-2. For a moment, it looked like USA might turn things around.

But the final inning changed everything. Venezuela’s Eugenio Suarez delivered a deep hit after Javier Sanoja reached base and moved into scoring position. Sanoja then made it home, putting Venezuela ahead 3-2. That single moment shifted the game completely.

USA could not respond after that. Roman Anthony struck out in the final moments, and Venezuela celebrated a historic win. While the team result hurt, much of the attention stayed on Aaron Judge and whether he could have done more in a crucial game.
