Cody Bellinger spoke about his decision during a media interaction with SNY in late January 2026, shortly after reporting to early Yankees workouts in Tampa, Florida.

He explained that while playing in the World Baseball Classic matters to him, this year was not the right time. “I’ve definitely wanted to do it at some point in my career,” Bellinger said.

“But going into free agency and now into spring training, I want to focus on what’s right in front of me. I owe it to the Steinbrenner family and the Yankees to be my best and try to win a championship.”

Bellinger signed the deal with New York on January 18, 2026, after weeks of talks led by general manager Brian Cashman and team owner Hal Steinbrenner.



The contract marked one of the Yankees’ biggest offseason moves. While Aaron Judge and David Bednar committed to Team USA for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, Bellinger chose a different path.

His choice clearly reflects his first season under the new agreement priorities.

Before Bellinger’s signing, Domínguez and Jones were expected to compete for a starting role. Now, both players may see reduced opportunities early in the season.

The Yankees are betting that Bellinger can return to his strong 2025 form, when he hit .272 with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs. His decision to skip the World Baseball Classic gives him extra time to prepare for Opening Day in New York.
