Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki suddenly silence Dodgers pitching fears after huge statement win against Phillies

The Los Angeles Dodgers walked into their weekend series against the Philadelphia Phillies with a few big questions hanging over their pitching staff. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Roki Sasaki, and Justin Wrobleski gave the Dodgers exactly what they needed. The biggest statement came on Sunday when the Dodgers crushed the Phillies 9 to 1. Yamamoto struck out 10 batters across 5⅓ scoreless innings and looked far sharper than he had just a few weeks ago. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Japanese star later signed his game jersey for longtime trainer Osamu Yada and his wife as a special gift for their 40th anniversary. Even after such a dominant outing, Yamamoto stayed calm and focused, making it clear he believes his form is still improving.

The Dodgers needed their pitchers to step up this weekend, and all three starters answered in different ways. Yamamoto looked more comfortable from the beginning, especially with his fastball velocity finally climbing again. His fastball averaged 96.7 mph against Philadelphia, almost one mile faster than his season average.

Yamamoto said through Japanese media translation, “In my bullpen session two days ago, I was throwing harder than I thought. Today, too.”

That extra speed showed up during the most important moment of the game. After Justin Crawford’s double put runners on second and third base in the fifth inning, Yamamoto responded by striking out Kyle Schwarber with a 97.5 mph fastball. He then struck out Trea Turner with a sinker to escape the inning without damage.

Meanwhile, Justin Wrobleski continued his surprising rise. The young left-hander had recently struggled because hitters were making too much contact against him. This time, things looked completely different. Wrobleski held the Phillies to one run over seven innings while striking out a career-high nine batters. His fastball reached 97 mph and averaged a season-best 94.9 mph.

“It’s just kind of felt like a little bit of a missing piece,” Wrobleski said. “It just honestly gives me more confidence to kind of go out there and attack even more.”

Roki Sasaki also answered growing questions about whether he was fully ready for Major League Baseball. His improved velocity and confidence helped the Dodgers feel far more secure about their rotation depth moving forward.

With the NL West lead now growing again, the Dodgers suddenly look much more stable than they did only a week ago.
