Neeraj Chopra at Diamond League Final Highlights: Neeraj Chopra clinches second place; Julian Weber smashes 90m-mark twice
Neeraj Chopra at Diamond League Final Live Updates: Neeraj Chopra’s remarkable run of podium finishes continued but he had to settle for second place again as Julian Weber of Germany claimed his first Diamond League Finals crown with a stunning display in Zurich. Chopra, the 2022 winner, managed a best of 85.01m in his sixth and final attempt, edging out Trinidad’s Keshorn Walcott (84.95m) for second place.
Weber, however, was on another level. The 29-year-old German launched a season-best 91.57m throw — his personal best and the third 90m-plus mark of his career — after opening with 91.37m. His commanding performance left the rest of the seven-man field chasing shadows, as he finished more than six metres ahead of Chopra.
Chopra, who has built a reputation for consistency with his 88m-plus throws, had an off day with only three legal attempts. He opened with 84.35m, slipped with fouls in the middle rounds, and rescued his campaign with his final 85.01m effort. “Not too bad, but I still need to throw further before Tokyo. I’m happy for Julian — he was excellent today,” Chopra said.
The German extended his head-to-head edge to 3-1 over Chopra this season, though the Indian still leads 15-5 overall. Chopra has not finished outside the top two since June 2021 and heads to Tokyo next month as defending world champion, eyeing gold over distance.
Two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra finished runner-up in the Diamond League Finals for the third straight year as Germany’s Julian Weber produced a commanding display to lift his maiden title. Chopra managed a best throw of 85.01m in his final attempt, climbing to second ahead of Keshorn Walcott (84.95m). But Weber was in a league of his own, unleashing back-to-back 90m-plus throws — 91.37m and a personal best 91.57m — to seal the title.
The Indian star, who won the 2022 edition, looked below his best with just three legal throws, missing his usual 88m-plus range. “Not too bad, but I need to throw a little further before the World Championships,” Chopra admitted, while congratulating Weber.
The German extended his head-to-head record to 3-1 against Chopra this season, though the Indian still leads 15-5 overall since 2016. Chopra now turns focus to defending his world title in Tokyo next month.

Diamond League Final Live: Welcome
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Diamond League Finals in Zurich. Neeraj Chopra, the two-time Olympic medalist is aiming to reclaim the Diamond League trophy while working on improving his technique under legendary coach Jan Zelezny.
Neeraj Chopra at Diamond League Final Live Updates: Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra finished second in the Diamond League Finals for the third year in a row as Germany’s Julian Weber produced a sensational performance to win his maiden crown. Chopra managed a best of 85.01m in his last attempt, enough to edge past Trinidad’s Keshorn Walcott (84.95m) for second place.
Weber, however, was untouchable. The German began with 91.37m before hurling a personal best 91.57m in his second attempt, the season’s world-leading throw. None of the other six competitors came close, with Weber’s margin over Chopra exceeding six metres.
Chopra, winner in 2022, was not at his fluent best, registering just three legal throws and falling short of his usual 88m-plus mark. “There were positives and a few things I need to fix before Tokyo. I am happy for Julian — he threw really far,” Chopra said.
The 27-year-old remains remarkably consistent, never finishing outside the top two since June 2021. Weber now leads Chopra 3-1 in 2025 head-to-heads, though the Indian still dominates their overall record (15-5). Chopra will now aim to peak at the World Championships in Tokyo next month, where he defends his gold medal.
